I've an oven which when turned off in hot state while in convection mode will turn on the fans for few minutes next time I turn it on, regardless of mode and temperature. To overcome this bug I need to put mains power off for couple of minutes and let the caps keeping the ram alive drain. Not only it has hot state reset bug but also a ram initialization issue as well it seems. Thankfully that state is not stored in nvram.

The manufacturer was as expected: 'we're not software guy, we can send an 'expert' engineer (who knows only to replace parts, no debugging) and it'll cost $$'. I thought I'll reverse it and fixing someday, till then I'll live with it.

Any tech college kid can write an app in common frameworks. I'll admit llm code generators are great when they can translate electron apps to say tauri or even better to QT at reasonable cost :)

Unless you want to increase productivity in specific field (say some kinds of software development) you won't even need to remember anything more than cat, ls etc. In those specific usecases you'll become habituated to the command you use frequently, nobody becomes a grep ninja on day 0.

Whenever I need something mildly complex with ffmpeg or imagemagick, the right command is just a web search away, I rarely remember syntax of these anyway. I find commands less obvious and harder to find for windows shell (technically powershell is cross platform btw), but maybe that's because I'm not much familiar with windows-ism'

Tip: whenever you encounter a useful command syntax/one liner, save it with brief description. I find konsole's built in quick commands quite handy, some other terminals probably have such features too. Otherwise a simple markdown list is enough.

That's done locally. You can try training wake word models for any open assistant and see how much computing power it needs for even simple phrase.

It's well possible and previously tv mic had been used as bugging device. The problem is, way too many security researchers look in system level software of iOS and even other components of the device that such practice will be too risky for apple (same applies for mainstream android products). Also processing realtime audio, finding potentially unrealiable topic from it and doing realtime ad is actually too much work as of today's tech (might change sooner than you think though).

What, I think, is more practical is to use the whole query after the wake word to show ad, and potentially use other app tracking data, which is way much reliable than voice for targeting purpose. Voice data is useful for bugging purpose, primarily (ab)used by nation states and LE.

I bet in the medical procedure case mentioned in the blog the user searched/talked about that in other apps and average people aren't good to notice these privacy leaks.

I'm not talking about AI in general here. I know some form of AI has been out there for ages and ML definitely has some field specific usecases. Here the objective is to discuss the feeling about gen AI produced content in contrast to human made content, potentially pondering the hypothetical scenario that the gen AI infrastructure is used ethically. I hope the notion of generative AI is sort of clear, but it includes LLMs, photo (not computer vision) and audio generators and any multimodal combination of these.

Is there such an example? Till now I didn't come across any remotely good/interesting music generated by AI of any meaningful length. Short clips are kinda good but that needs creative composer to arrange them into music.

Yes that is absolutely annoying and I hardly use such online services other than those I have to like bank, any government services, package delivery/ridebooking etc where in app call doesn't exist and calling is necessary sometimes and some healthcare.

Sometimes they do it to reduce throwaway/inactive accounts as (npn voip) phone numbers are harder to get at scale than email ids. But ironically, some countries have law requiring them to keep the logs so it might be used to connect identity against one's will, say, by law enforcement.

I'm not talking about giving up copyright to content. CC-0 means waiving any as much rights as possible legally, which depends on jurisdiction.

I couldn't find anything about default license of publicly available material in your country, nor about the impossibility you mentioned by basic web search. I'm genuinely interested to read about it so do share sources if you can.

Whatever you put on public domain without explicit license, it becomes CC-0 equivalent. So while it feels violating, it's perfectly fine. The best opsec should be separating your digital identities and also your physical life if you don't want it to be aggregated in the same way. These technologies (scraping) have been around for a while and along with llm's will stay for quite sometime in future, there's no way around them.

I've no problem with paying the artists of the great contents I enjoy. I think they deserve the support and praise. What I (and we should IMO) hate is user subjugating behaviour the streaming apps and hollywood studios impose. I'd pay for the content and the bandwidth of the streaming/downloading service. Better yet, pay per download like netflix dvd days.

Digital restriction management has been proven ineffective for piracy. And piracy is the only way I get good quality content in accessible way. For example due to DRM netflix will not run on any of my devices above 720p no matter what I pay. There's simply no way I can pay the artists directly AFAIK.
