It's not that hard, just read the install guides and instructions. My first Arch install was like 8y ago and I expected it to be difficult - it wasn't.
Teach your kid how the world works so they're prepared for it and don't go through the same thing. Most of us didn't have parents that cared enough to bother and it's a huge advantage to know in advance that everything in this country is predatory and precarious.

It's possible that there's more than one problem that needs addressing. We're on the same page w.r.t. the Democratic party being an absolute policy failure for decades.
Or maybe actually give them a civics education? I'm behind a free online basic civics class every 2y that gets you a $250 credit on your taxes or something. There has to be a reason to actually take it and pay attention.

Fair enough. IIRC there's a mandatory civics test to complete 8th grade nationwide which was, ostensibly, intended to prevent electoral problems like this
I honestly think we should have a 20 question multiple choice basic 8th grade civics quiz before people are allowed to vote. We no longer have an electorate that's informed enough to be capable of voting. Score 60% or higher on that quiz or get the fuck out of the booth.
Edit: I'm incorrect, there's no national requirement that I can find. In CA we can't finish 8th grade without studying and passing a civics test covering this material: https://www.ixl.com/standards/california/social-studies/grade-8. So yeah, I amend my opinion - these standards should be followed nationwide.
Don't just look at sdb hits in the log. Open up that entire session in journalctl kernel mode (journalctl -k -bN where N is the session number in session history) and find the context surrounding the drive dropping and reconnecting.
You'll probably find that something caused a USB bus reset or a similar event before the drive dropped and reconnected. if you find nothing like that try switching power supplies for the HDD and/or switching USB ports until you can move the drive to a different USB root port. Use lsusb -t and swap ports until the drive is attached beneath a different root port. You might have a neighboring USB device attached to the bus that's causing issues for other devices attached to the same root port (it happens, USB devices or drivers sometimes behave badly.)
Always look at the context of the event when you're troubleshooting a failure like this, don't just drill down on the device messages. Most of the time the real cause of the issue preceded the symptom by a bit of time.
