I wonder if the abandonment occurred around the time that image uploads were disabled, old images wiped and instance was often down. That's about the time I realized it was basically impossible to moderate and contribute to a community I created on the instance. I now handle mod duties from another instance, one that is usually accessible and allows image uploads.
I understand the intention but it's not necessarily a platform thing. Lemmy has the same type of people, just in smaller concentrations due to it being less used.
My point only being, there are terrible people on any platform that are incapable of having a discussion without becoming the lowest common denominator and the platforms (Lemmy included) generally won't feel the need to take action. It's just part of the charm of the internet. We could just as easily create a /c/ for Lemmy stuff that shouldn't be ok but is.
I'm old enough now that I won't be around for too futuristic of times and I find it a peaceful thought that I'll be getting off the ferris wheel before too much longer, regardless of what's happening. To just stop existing while the world melts down seems like I'll be getting the better end of the deal.
I feel like even when this article was published in 2015, Dr. Oz would be small potatoes compared to a large portion of the population getting their medical advice from celebrities, influencers and self-proclaimed experts on their favorite social network.
Not as funny as a person adept at using stencils to paint on other people's property getting upset someone used his stenciling on their property, IMHO.
I can't say legally since I'm not a lawyer but I don't think much of people who suggest you do (crime) because (crime) occurred. I consider it a low-end mentality to view that as a resolution or justice of some kind.
His celebrity status depends on hyperbolic rhetoric like this. If he had handled it the way normal people do, through courts, he'd be damaging his mystique. The sheep that think he's the bee's knees slurp this bullshit up.
This is the first time I've ever seen someone mention the Onion and journalism in the same sentence instead of a satire site. I'm not saying it's less legitimate than the traditional outlets, just thought they were always proudly mocking news outlets, not competing with them.
I understand your point but if you end up on their forum through searches, it's pretty clear that the majority of participants are the loud ones, making it irrelevant how many quiet ones aren't participating. You're just reading a topic between someone needing help and a group of people trolling them because they can.
What are you gonna tell me next, that 4chan isn't the best place to go for relationship advice?
