Mix of both. Messengers, Mastodon and YouTube, mostly apps (except when I want to listen to YT in the background). Maps and games, also apps. But for Lemmy I use the web frontend because I haven't yet found a convincing app and the web frontend is good enough.

When have random people on the Internet ever cared about correct spelling and grammar? In any language? I've been an Internet regular for over 20 years and if anything, autocorrecting smartphones have improved the average quality of spelling.

I don't feel I'm missing out on anything important. I don't want my instance to engage in any form of ideological censorship (in any direction at all unless required by law) and don't feel they are doing that. But I'm glad this thread exists because it tells me about other instances I could try if I ever became dissatisfied with mine.

OP already solved their problem but for others finding this thread: If you already know the country or city (or other general area), you can try asking in a community for that country or city. Few people can pinpoint locations around the world generally, but people subscribing to such communities may be able to help within that area.

How long is a piece of string? Depends entirely on the specific case. For example, if you're murdered in front of witnesses, the answer will be very different than if you simply disappear mysteriously without anyone finding your body.

For me it is in the same window by default. It seems you can change it by clicking the three-dot menu and selecting which side you want to add it to. I am attaching a screenshot (my UI is in German, so the labels will be different if yours isn't).
