  • I use Whatsapp for all my friends since in my region EVERYONE uses whatsapp. I have one cousin who uses Signal though, so that’s something.

  • Taiga is an open-source and self-hosted project management tool. Not sure if it has all the functionality you need, but it seems quite good. Never tried it though, since I don’t really do any important projects. Who knows, it could be amazing!

  • yep I like Obsidian. It’s a lot better than what the much bigger companies are doing. I also like Joplin for quicker notes because the vault system in obsidian is really annoying since it’s slow to switch between them and they all have individual settings and plugins (great for customisation, but horrible for getting setup quick)

  • Notepad++ really is just a better notepad. I will definitely look at Dolphin, it has a Windows version which I might need to try out. I currently use OneCommander. Yeah Windows Media Player isn’t very good. I use PotPlayer, but others like VLC, mpv, etc. all seem great too. Nomacs is awesome.

Yeah, Linux is probably superior to Windows considering the fact the latter literally spams you with ads and promotions to make a MS account and to buy Office 365. Insane that everyone just puts up with this. I currently use a Windows machine, only reason I’m not installing Linux is because a. it’s one of those 2-in-1 touchscreen foldables, which Linux doesn’t really like too much, and b. I’m not bothered to reinstall all my apps and change all the settings and preferences again. Next computer I get, it’ll be Linux (either Fedora or Mint probably, those two seem good)

  • I use NetNewsWire (iOS), but I might try out Newsblur. Seems pretty interesting. SpamBlocker looks like a cool alternative to Whoscall. Element is great, the only downside is getting people to adopt it. Firefox (and its forks) are awesome.

  • IT SCREENRECORDS TOO??

i guess I don’t need OBS (I’ll keep it around though in case I need to use the camera since I use that sometimes)

  • IT CAN CAPTURE REGIONS OF THE SCREEN? IT HAS ACTUALLY GOOD HOTKEYS??? WOAHHHHH

  • VSCodium works for web development and is okay for Python, but stuff like C/C++ and IDE is super helpful

  • yeah, there’s not really any alternatives for Jetbrainsls IDEs. As a non-professional I use VSCodium (VSCode minus MS) but I get why IDEs are preferred in professional environments

  • i love that floorp allows you to put the tab bar wherever! I have it on the bottom close to my apps.

I also respect people who use librewolf, it seems great too. There’s a few annoying bits due to the anti-fingerprinting settings (e.g. defaulting to light mode) but I guess it depends on your preferences on how private you want to be.

  • helps you keep track of your sources, it was really helpful for my history coursework

  • most of them are fantastic, esp. given that it’s essentially competing with companies with millions in funding

  • some proprietary apps have more functionality, are more stable, are easier to use, etc. because it’s very hard for a community of hobbyists to compete with the likes of multibillion corporations. Honestly, I really respect the FOSS projects that ARE really good, competing with these huge companies with pretty much only donations and their determination.

Some good examples of proprietary software I think that are functionally better include a bunch of apps used in professional workflows (though there are many FOSS apps used professionally like Blender!) and Unity/Unreal Engine (Godot is amazing for what 90% of most people need and is a lot lighter too, and is catching up in terms of 3D graphics/lighting. Unreal/Unity and Godot both have pros and cons)

If everything was FOSS and received the kind of funding proprietary apps get, the world would be very different indeed.

  • I really like OnlyOffice, pretty much a carbon copy of the MS Office UI and doesn't screw up on MS-specific files (docx, pptx, etc.)

Also, I like that OnlyOffice, unlike MS Office, has all the things in one app vs having separate apps for documents, spreadsheets, slides, etc. You can just tab between your different documents!

  • interesting, I'll have to try loqseq.

That might explain why some FOSS apps have terrible UI. There's plenty that have really really good UI as well

  • I like godot a lot more than unity. Both are great, but besides being open-source, Godot loads way faster and GDScript is super simple and is built in to the engine vs needing to use a separate IDE. I would say that in terms of 3D graphics, Godot is catching up but not quite there yet compared to the likes of Unity and Unreal.
