No system is perfect, has every rules and isn't relying on the master to some degree. But then, if you dont like death as being part of the game, why play dnd at all then ?
It would be like not liking horror and picking CoC.
If you want your PC to always survive no matter what, either play a system with it in the rules or make a deal with the DM. But blasting dnd because its not part of the core rules (besides all the ways to bring a PC back from the dead that are already there) isnt fair.
Youre right. Its not like death was part of the mechanics from the start, they also could be ignored.
Also, there totally isnt like 5 different ways for the players to rez a pc.
And lets forget about habing NPCs do the rezing as a sidequest.
I say all that, but I love death. I WANT my PC to die if he dies. Thats how you get thrills. Suspense. Tension. Playing with cheats on is fun, but gets boring fast.
Yeah, but a stake with the reputation of the death house doesnt sound really that interesting to use for any reason but sadistic thoughts IMO.
Of course death is needed for suspense over danger. Doesnt need to be this fast thought.
Plus, low level doesnt only mean no story developped before dying. It also means less options and more dependant on luck. A single crit at level 1 can be enough to one shot a player. Thats why I hate starting at level 1. I prefer level 3, for options, survivability, and the fun of not being a near death one trick poney.
Great ! Now not only have I killed new characters, I also have to do extra work and forget the first campaign alltogether.
How about I forget step 1 : run death house as it is, and step 2 : kill half my party with cheap traps and unfair fights, to go straight to step 3 : do something else.
Yeah. I tried episode 1, but for me there are too many players. I enjoy smaller tables. 4 is the sweet spot player wise. But I did enjoyed the animated series
I get the danger and the stress and signaling "this is barovia bitch" feeling pf the death house. But as a DM ? I hate killing players before they had a story and when they barely can't do anything about it. I probably couldnt run that module, Im not sadistic enough. I say "sorry" everytime my players get koed and I dont feel they were stupid enough to deserve it.
Lol. "He's pretty heavy". In 5th its size that matters. If its medium its fine. Even if it doesnt make sense, perfect swimming in plate doesn't either, but you dont just say to a player "oh btw in plate you die if you fall into water as you cant swim" while fighting around water for the first time.
Im glad you cleared it up after. In my case, I ended up leaving for other reasons but the nerf sticked. Mind you, if I knew at character creation it would be fine. But I didn't.
Every change should be treated the same : you tell about them at character creation and you tell them during the game while allowing for their set of rules on the present session if you cannot think of them in advance.
Homebrew, legal rules, anything should be the same. It's not during a game that you tell the multiclass druid cleric that the steroid goodberries dont work in your game, as he's trying to heal someone after a fight.
This actually happened to me. Don't fucking nerf the core of a character's mechanics midgame.
If you got to look up rules and nobody cares or wants to, skip it. Its my advice. Use rules only if its necessary and soemwhat contributing to a fun experience.
Fun fact. Bardcore is actually the name of the musical genre that recently emerged where people recreate modern songs with medieval/renaissance instruments. I highly recommand Yeah from Usher bardcore style.
