  • you can usually pick up a setup better than your TV speakers for ~100 dollars from a thrift shop/used electronic store/craigslist, then upgrade incrementally as you feel necessary. the real problem IMO is that it permeates floors and wall more and takes up more space which makes it a shitty choice for apartments. Setting it up is also a PITA. I prefer headphones for almost everything., but of course that doesn't work for group stuff.

  • Audiophile equipment is full of placebos and scams. But there's also a lot of very real improvements. I would also say the majority of people are well before the point of diminishing returns but hey.

One big problem is that the source of your music often is the limiting factor. A lot of music sounds not so great on my nice headphones. .Likewise, the songs I really appreciate on my headphones, tend to sound like mush on shitty speakers. That doesn't make either music bad, they know their audience but If I didn't like much of the hifi music then I probably wouldn't care much about my sound setup.

I think like most things there's a balance to be had. Obsessing about the little stuff can often get in the way of enjoying it, and be a massive waste of money. But I also wear headphones for 10+hrs a day, it's worth investing in them.

  • Earth’s time has started to end. Its death is inevitable.

Even in a worst case scenario life will continue on earth. It's honestly doubtful that humanity will end. This is not controversial among climate scientists. Don't get me wrong, societal collapse, mass human deaths and a huge extinction event are all on the table, but there are many lifeforms that will thrive.

  • I don't think that's all that true. There's a lot of survivorship bias at play, a whole lot of cheaper models failed long ago and were replaced. Older washers have less protection against user error too, stuff like load balancing alerts. Finally the market has widened, washer/dryers are much less of a luxury as they once were, so the low end of the market has filled out with poorly constructed models.

What is definitely the case is that they are harder to repair. Part of this is cultural, part of this is companies being dicks (looking at you samsung) and part of this is genuinely more complexity.

  • I suffer from chronic migraines. Mindfulness meditation is a good way of delaying the onset a bit, a 20minute meditation can sometimes save me taking a sick day or get me through a bus ride home. Sometimes if I can't sleep I meditate and I find that either helps me sleep, or makes me feel better without sleep. I don't really know if I would want to be in a community about it though.

  • Well craigslist in my area is kinda dead so Facebook market place is the only place to do local buying and selling. It also acts as a lowest common denominator, I find someone on facebook send a few messages until we agree on some other social media to continue communicating on. Then My family uses What's app and has done since before they were acquired by meta. Getting them to switch is something I push for, but I'm not holding my breath.

  • Amd has always run really lean in terms of employees which hurts their quality imo. In 2016 (a year before ryzen 1 came out amds lowest point quality wise) intel had ~100k employees, at the same time amd had a little over 8000 and supported a wider portfolio of products, today amd is up to about 30k and it shows (although until last week intel was also up to 130k)
