  • Anti-Semitism is used for people who dislike Jews, anti-Zionism is opposition to a political ideology. One of these is deplorable, the other is vital to any non-totalitarian society, whether you agree with it or not.

By blurring the line between the two you are at best either legitimizing anti-Semitism or pushing towards a totalitarian mindset where political ideologies cannot be challenged. In reality you're doing both. And even worse, I think you know what you're doing.

  • It's more recent science, but it seems every step of processing food (boiling, mashing, drying etc) breaks down cell structures, and that this in turn can make it harder for the body to take up nutrition. So you end up eating more but getting less nutritional value.

Research is still ongoing though, and of course mashed potatoes from powder is obviously still much better than ultra-processed food.

    Here's a source

  • In terms of nutritional value it's actually quite a huge difference, with homemade mashed potatoes being a lot better for you. Something about food being healthier when it's less processed.

Still, the powder one is not the worst thing, and boiling up potatoes takes too long some days. I like keeping some texture though, so for me it's homemade whenever I feel like having it. :)

  • I'm swimming in it! We always have a white Christmas, but this year it's spectacular. You could already ski (cross country) on the 23rd, since then there's 20 more centimetres of crispy new snow on top. It's amazing!

Obviously doesn't compensate for the heat elsewhere, but it won't stop me from appreciating what we've got!

  • That's fucking great! Keep it up!

  • It's like a trope. Old men who used to be really shitty fathers and now desperately try to cling on to the image of themselves as the heads of the family even though they will never truly be forgiven for who they used to be, and everyone are kind of afraid that they still are.

It's sad, it's painful, and it's fucking impossible to deal with in a good way.

  • What the fuck.

Hope you're both doing alright. I guess one could say something about how helping others is what Christmas is all about or whatever, but seriously, what the fuck is wrong with people.

Good thing you were there to be a decent human being in a shitty situation.

  • It seems like you're going through a rough time, but that you're dealing with it in a healthy way and set to find true value in life. You will be out on your own soon enough, and you'll do great. Time goes by very fast at least in retrospect.

It seems your parents have their set of pretty deep issues, but it's at least cute that they are making the effort.

    Hold on there!

  • That absolutely sucks.

But, coming from a family where we all suck at gifts, it is somewhat relatable. It is unbelievable how difficult and anxiety-provoking gift buying can be for some people, and caring more about someone only makes it harder. In the end one could land on something awful and last minute after worrying about it for months, and it seems like one simply doesn't care.

I of course don't know this specific situation, and it is indeed a particularly bad gift considering your allergy. But don't read it as a sign that they don't care - it could be that they care quite a lot, and that it's a case of something else entirely.

  • Anti-fascism and anti-semitims are also not mutually exclusive. Anti-communism and anti-consumerism are not mutually exclusive. Anti-war and anti-liberalism are not mutually exclusive. Anti-abortion and anti-gay rights are not mutually exclusive.

Hell, few things are mutually exclusive. You had a handful of god-damn Jewish Nazis and one fucking honorary aryan during the war. So not even Semitism and anti-Semitism are mutually fucking exclusive.

Things not being mutually exclusive is a pretty fucking moot argument.

  • I know Russians who live in Europe and who are deeply anti war and Putin, but whose families are still completely buying into Russian propaganda and who think their own children are lying to them.

I also know Russians from less brainwashed families who are critical.

More strikingly perhaps, I had a friend a little less than a decade ago who went to study in Russia for half a year, and came back completely apologetic for everything Putin stood for. I cut contact and haven't heard from her since, so I have no idea where she stands now, but it was a forceful demonstration of the propaganda apparatus. It's not that they're necessarily evil or bad people, they've just been subject to world-class propaganda for decades. Opposing Putin after all that takes quite a lot of work.

  • Genuinely curious who'll be killed off first - him or Putin.

  • I got it this year! Most wonderful time of the year indeed!

  • There's a slight chance I could be convinced to accept the french R into the company of real R sounds, but I agree the rolling one is where it's at. The American one is something special.

  • Sounds amazing!

An Argentinian friend told me she felt some of their Christmas food was a bit strange, as it was a lot of heavy food that you'd otherwise never eat in summer but that's eaten anyway because it's associated with Christmas. Does this fit your experience?

It's ten below where I am, and I certainly wouldn't mind being served up that dish haha

  • Oh wow!

I always assumed it was connected to the word "by" as used in "by and by", so that it would basically mean "have a good afterwards".

Cool stuff. Bob Dylan makes more sense to me now:

And goodbye is too good a word babe
So I'll just say fare thee well

  • Bingo!

Christmas traditions are a fun mix of things. The modern Santa Claus is mostly a mix of Saint Nicholas and a bunch of continental European traditions, but the pointy red hat is the product of being what we refer to as a nisse - a mythical creature closely related to gnomes.

We have long traditions of leaving food out for the nisse living in the barn for Christmas. And Santa is not named after Saint Nicholas over here - we call him julenissen. The Christmas gnome, if you will.

  • I'm currently seeing a girl I started dating after she had problems with her regex and I helped her out.

    So far so good.
