  • Marketing is becoming increasingly work from wherever. Even with AI, demand for copywriting and written content is high, if you combine that with even moderate technical literacy (wordpress, html, adobe, etc.) and there is aways demand from smaller companies.

I have no degree in marketing, but got all the free certs from Google, Mailchimp, etc., signed up for some marketing focused newsletters to learn the buzz words and just started digging in and learning.

It can start as gig work if you can't find an in-house job, and I definitely didn't make great money, but it was survivable. And the skills open up other side projects like affiliate marketing, especially if you have a cool niche passion to share with the world.

  • I'm not into sports and I have no plans to watch the Superb Owl today, but I do have a big appreciation for humans being awesome, and for that I can usually appreciate watching even if I don't care who wins.

Watching a 300lb man accelerate like a freight train or someone jump several feet into the air, twist over backwards, catch a ball and land where they meant to is definitely something I enjoy, because they do work their asses off to get that good and I can appreciate anybody's passion at that level.

That said, totally agree on the money side, it taints so many things (looking at you IOC).

  • I'll second CBT, it helped me a lot. My therapist started with identifying my "core beliefs" like "worrying helps me avoid bad things" and "worrying makes me better at my job" and then through some structured routines helped me change or event disregard them. I'm very analytical and she really helped show the illogical nature of all the time I spent worrying.

That said I first needed a low dose zoloft prescription to even be willing to book the therapy, but I've since weened off it.

specifically hypothetical worries, i.e. "what if"

  • I'm in NYC and a big mac meal is $13 including tax in midtown according to their app. The one in the article is at some rest stop in CT and is almost certainly some franchise owner gouging, which is the real reason prices are so high.

  • I'm approaching 40 this year. Around 20, I missed an important uni deadline, and meant the degree I had planned would cost me an extra year I couldn't afford (like literally couldn't afford the tuition). Managed to finish, but with a degree no one would recommend. Was absolutely panicked.

Ultimately, ended up very successful in a job in a country on the other side of the world. Met the woman who is now my wife of 13 years, had some amazing adventures, moved to a few more different countries, changed industries again about 10 years ago, and worked my way up to upper management again before leaving that field too.

TL;DR No, stress has brought me nothing but misery, I have no regrets except that I didn't enjoy the ride as much as I could have.

Learn new stuff as you work, or as hobbies (my entire second career started as a hobby). Don't be afraid to "fake it till you make it" and keep an eye out for jobs you didn't even consider as a possibility. I personally avoid corporate gigs, smaller independent companies are more likely to notice you and use you for the skills you bring. Life can fly by, enjoy the ride.

  • Fun fact from Wikipedia:
Ileana Garcia won in 2020 against incumbent José Javier Rodriguez by a margin of 34 votes.

Alex Rodriguez "ran" in the same race as a third party candidate, and despite not campaigning, recieved over six thousand votes. Likely because he shared the same last name as the Dem. Former Republican State Senator Frank Artiles has been arrested for bribing Alex to run and Alex will be testifying against him as part of his plea deal.

No wonder she has a soft spot for criminals.
