I've been thinking about this a lot recently. In a lot of your more famous cyberpunk stories, like Snow Crash, the world itself is a violent dystopia, and the internet is depicted as evolving into something both intensely interesting, but also very chaotic and filled with hostile people looking to scam or exploit you. The contemporary internet is moving towards an extreme degree of corporate regulation and control. Its not chaotic - it's intensely ordered. It's not interesting - the content is boiled down to the lowest common denominator and recycled ad-nauseam. Companies like Google are now trying to take the current internet, which has tragically become like a gated community with billboards, into something even worse than that. I imagine the next step will be all out war on the only non-Chromium based browser of note left: Firefox. After Firefox is gone, Google will own the internet as we know it.

That's a good point, too. My general idea was we have certain things we've created that we can't leave unchecked or else it might be disastrous for the environment. Human infrastructure expects humans to exist.

I'm going to provide one very important reasons it would be disastrous to the ecosystem if humans were suddenly deleted from the Earth: what happens to the many currently active nuclear reactors? And what happens when Chernobyl's sarcophagus finally corrodes entirely and exposes that radioactive blight to the entirety of Europe and central Asia? Probably nothing good is the answer.

An unpopular opinion, I am sure, but if you're a beginner with something - a new language, a new framework - and hate reading the docs, it's a great way of just jumping into a new project. Like, I've been hacking away on a django web server for a personal project and it saved me a huge amount of time with understanding how apps are structured, how to interact with its settings, registering urls, creating views, the general development lifecycle of the project and the basic commands I need to do what I'm trying to do. God knows Google is a shitshow now and while Stackoverflow is fine and dandy (when it isn't remarkably toxic and judgmental), the fact is that it cuts down on hours of fruitless research, assuming you're not asking it to do anything genuinely novel or hyper-specific.

Lore is the thing you use to establish major characters as gay or bisexual and then backpedal when it makes the reactionary manchildren who play your game irrationally upset.

In lore, that would involve normalizing a non-trivial amount of genocide and slavery.

This is a great writeup and matches with my experiences as well. That said, I would say that the discourse around the subject is complicated and itself fraught with emotion. Ironically (or perhaps just appropriately), the discourse is framed as competitive: one between "boomers" and "gamers," with the prevailing narrative being that out of touch pearl clutchers are obsessed with attacking forms of entertainment they don't understand instead of dealing with the real problems of society. Part of the narrative, however, is also the categorical rejection from gamers that video games have the ability to affect your mental state or influence your emotions in ANY capacity. Which, as you've noted, they do. It's competition. We see professional athletes get into fights and engage in poor sportsmanship constantly. In baseball, pitchers will throw balls at batters with the intent to hit. Batters will charge the mound. And this is in a game that explicitly forbids violence.

I think part of the issue is this expectation (and you noted this, as well) that people attach their identity to being "good at video games" - it's a signifier of accomplishment for people who haven't really accomplished much. Often times, this is young people or people whose careers are just getting started, or who are still in school and have a tenuous degree of personal agency. The thing that's tilting, the thing that makes them upset, is that they expect this to be a domain in which they have power and control, and loss is a signifier of the fact that this is not true. It reminds them they don't really have any power over their own lives.

There's a lot of use cases where regex makes a lot of sense: complex log parsing, determining if a value entered is a valid phone number or email, syntax highlighting, data validation in ML preprocessing, etc. A lot of languages also come with certain features that allow regex to be more efficient than dumb string matching, such as the ability to pre-compile patterns and the flexibility of being able to choose between deterministic and non-deterministic finite automata, should you need efficiency for one use case and flexibility for another. It really depends on what you're designing and how it's going to be used, of course.

That's a perfectly valid criticism of most manga, One Piece included. Especially shonen manga. The "same-face" issue is part of the reason anime and manga have women with crazy hair colors. It's easier to color code a character than give them a distinct face.

It's also just a bad time travel movie because the purpose of it was to be appeal to self-contained nostalgia. Like, "hey, remember all these OTHER movies you saw that built up to this one? Well, they're going to revisit these in minor, superficial ways at the very end of our huge event." Yeah, dog, I don't care about those movies anymore and they weren't very entertaining to begin with. Just get to the ball numbing action violence.

It was also just a straight up James Gunn movie with an ensemble cast of misfits. It's like...his thing. That's what's so weird about so many Marvel movies. They gave them to competent directors and basically said "make one of your movies, but with our characters and setting." Iron Man 2 was a Shane Black joint: took place at Christmas, lots of witty banter, there were some buddy cop elements. But the shell of it is an Iron Man movie.

They hated him because he spoke the truth.

My brother in Christ, you literally have no idea how much stuff is made out of petrochemicals, do you? Try asphalt, industrial solvents, cosmetics, any real lubricant, fertilizers, pesticides, textiles, circuitry, detergents, insulation, PVC, paint, adhesives, roofing material, synthetic rubbers, as well as a ton of pharmaceutical products and food additives. And that's not even an exhaustive list. Gasoline is a big part of the petrochemical industry, but it's not the totality of it.
