  • Well, I know for a while Steam only officially supported Ubuntu, and on their developer page It still mentions that they only support Ubuntu, though I don't know if they've just forgotten to update the page:

Steam only officially supports Ubuntu running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS or newer and SteamOS, but the Steam for Linux community is extremely resourceful and has managed to run Steam on a large variety of distros. Valve approves of these efforts but does not officially endorse or provide support for them.

  • Interesting, I will have a look at them - thanks!

  • The original commenter did mention they had health insurance

  • Glad to hear that its working smoothly there! Definitely don't hesitate to let us know here if you have any questions about anything! There is also !linux_gaming@lemmy.world for a more gaming-centric Linux community as well.

  • They really should have linked the main page which does have a screenshot (and a few partials): https://cinny.in/

  • RTX 2080 here, and this is the major blocker for me with Nvidia + Wayland: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/issues/1317

This issue causes XWayland apps to effectively render previous frames very sporadically, and it's especially very noticeable in Electron apps. Discord for example, sometimes someone will send a message and the message will appear, then disappear, then reappear, then disappear over and over again until it finally syncs back up. The user isn't actually deleting and resending their message of course, but the render state of the app is basically "jumping backwards through time".

Tried out the 544 beta driver, and while we did get Night Light/Color support (and that incessant top-screen flicker bug was fixed, occurred in both Wayland and X11), I started to notice the aforementioned issue heavily occurring in IntelliJ which is a Java based development tool which unfortunately is the final deal breaker for me since I can't really work when I write a line of code, and it disappears, reappears, disappears, then reappears again.

This only occurs via XWayland, and surprisingly games don't seem to get hit with it (in my case) so I suppose if you only use Wayland native apps like a web browser then it's fine - otherwise, it makes things very difficult. It also occurs on both Mutter (GNOME) and KWin (KDE) but I imagine there isn't a compositor where this doesn't happen due to what causes the actual problem in the first place.

After trying the 545 beta and the problem getting worse, it's put the nail in the coffin for me on Nvidia and I'll be picking up a 6700XT after my next paycheck comes in. It is a beta driver yes, but the root of the issue is due to the architecture of their driver which isn't going to be magically redone in between the beta and "stable" release.

So, no - I wish it was just a circlejerk, and realistically I can't see how it'd end up being this popular if it was just user error.

  • I can't speak for both games you listed, however for WoW - Blizzard games tend to have a good reputation for running on Linux (one of the few good things I like about Blizzard). Sometimes there are a few bugs here and there (OW had a mouse cursor locking problem) but generally they're pretty good.

I have been playing Diablo 3 on Linux for as long as I can remember, even before the massive rise of Linux gaming from the introduction of VKD3D/DXVK/Proton. I know D4 was working in Linux even during the betas, and I've heard StarCraft players who've said the same.

Of course, the system requirements never mention Linux as an officially supported platform, but I can't say I've ever heard of a Blizzard game that doesn't work on Linux (games they develop - games like CoD and originally Destiny 2 where they were only the publisher/launcher host is a different story) so I'd be very surprised if WoW doesn't work.

IIRC Blizzard's anti cheat ("Warden" I believe) is mostly server side which makes things way easier - I mean hell I know a lot of their games even supported Mac OS.

And as the others have linked, for MSFS you can check Proton but I hear the reception is good there too since it's rated as Silver on there.

These days I'm usually just playing the Diablo games from them, and I just use the Bottles app which makes it really easy to play non-Steam games. It even has an option to install the Battle.net client for you, then you login, install the game, and click play - it's super simple.

  • Have you found any other decent online-centric banks to switch to? I've been wanting to switch away from ONE for pretty much the reasons you listed, but through a basic search I didn't see anything else to was too appealing to me.

And the 2FA thing is ridiculous, at one point they didn't actually have the email option (or it was very well hidden) - had a bit of a rough month at some point and wasn't able to pay my phone bill which got it suspended, I also happened to have my card locked and got kicked out of the app so... I couldn't unblock my card to pay the phone bill, which I needed to get the 2FA code to login in... Ended up having to reach out to support and they were able to show me how to request a 2FA code over email.

This wouldn't even be a problem with most sites because I always use TOTP/Webauthn via my Yubikey when I have the option, and for something as critical as my bank account I really do not want SMS/Email to be an option for 2FA (I get why they have it, but I'd like to be able to turn it off for my account).

  • Ugh, I miss Simple so much. I was alright with ONE until they stripped the virtual card function from pockets... What is the actual point of Pockets now if I have to transfer the money directly back to my main checking area??

  • I don't get a chance to use Wayland too much (Nvidia sadly), but I swear I had heard KDE came up with something for this. I believe it was if you use non-alphanumeric keys, it's supposed to allow it (because you wouldn't use those in say, a password).

However, I can't confirm this - nor can I confirm if it'd work with Discord specifically.

  • Ah, congrats then! May there be more wins for you in the future!

  • Very nice! What game is this?

  • Yep... I was about to say "Oh just watch me try not to!"

  • I guess it depends on if you're the type of person who sees VSCode as an IDE or just a text editor.

Vim is effectively the same way.

  • Thank you, I hope you're able to get in soon and that it goes well for you too!

  • Mixed bag for me! I have a dentist appointment at noon today, I don't necessarily enjoy the dentist office like most others - but at the same time, I'd rather not have a cracked tooth either so... the dentist is the lesser of the two evils haha.

I've got a root canal upcoming too, which was originally supposed to happen today, but as far as I'm aware the plan was to push the root canal back for a different day and just deal with the cracked tooth today but we'll see.

  • Ah gotcha, I appreciate the info! I hope that someday a better solution for managing secure boot will work with immutable distros in the future then, so that you have a chance to give it a try (if you want to, of course).

  • I believe Universal Blue supports Secure Boot, since they specifically went to make it work for even Nvidia users - I'm assuming it works similarly for the non Nvidia variants or maybe just uses Fedora's default keys? I'm not too well versed in how SB works.

Then it also comes with Distrobox so you can just spin up an Arch container and use AUR apps through there.

  • Oh, interesting, you're correct there does appear to be one which looks to be $3 cheaper. I'll edit my comment to reflect that, thanks!
