Most of the issues with video games come from either game-related social media (e.g. bullying, political indoctrination, or just the massive time sink that MMOs and other multiplayer games can be which has an element of peer pressure) or stuff that is relatively easy to police on a per-game-basis (e.g. gambling, extreme contents). You can certainly waste a lot of time with single player games, too, but at that point we might as well not allow children to go home from school at all.

My last experience with Windows was with Windows 10, but updates were always taking an extremely long time both to download (my internet is a bit slow, Linux updates have way smaller download sizes) and to install, and update installation often failed.

It might be a bit of a misnomer. The tabs aren't deleted, just forcibly unloaded, and you can even prevent it from doing that on a per-tab-basis.

Also the pulling-teeth-process of updating Windows. How does a commercial OS shit the bed on that so hard?

I've been using the Firefox extension "Auto Tab Discard", which helps a lot with RAM usage. I like multi-tab-browsing and IME browsers just don't free up RAM when other applications need them.
