  • Thanks. I don't think I'm looking for anything in specific. I'm just always keeping my eyes open. And I don't know if other clients have more features or other benefits. I get along with Eternity reasonably well but I'm also not set on it. If you say there's nothing clearly superior, I'll stay on it.

  • Uh, my knowledge is a bit lacking. But I've been asked that question before. I don't think there are that many devices with less than 3GB around anymore. And they're probably 32bit, too. And have all kind of other issues, like modern webpages being way more demanding than in 2003. I'd skip all the details, people know what feels old and needs special treatment. If someone has an Athlon K7 with 512MB of RAM, they either need to get it recycled or a dedicated tutorial for that. Everything above should be handled by a good (32bit) distro with LXDE, LXQT, XFCE or something like that.

I think MX Linux is a good choice. I've also used a plain Debian with XFCE desktop for that. Other choices include: Bohdi Linux, Zorin OS Lite, AntiX, Linux Lite, Puppy Linux, Q4OS, LUbuntu, Linux Mint Xfce, Tiny Core, LXLE, Slax, peppermintOS, crunchbang++ and Sparky Linux.

  • Haha, yeah I didn't think it through properly. There are a lot of 90s TV series that got filmed on magnetic tape in 480. Guess you can't re-master Ally McBeal and redo the CGI / spaceship scenes in full HD. They could do it for Captain Kirk but the era after that is just SD television with stereo(?) sound and that's it, you're right. Sometimes people re-encode old stuff with more modern codecs and I've deleted old, blocky and very compressed DivX versions I had on my old computer.

  • What about recommending something like MX Linux if someone has an old laptop lying around and wants to revive it, and get into Linux this way?

And the question "Win 7 was the last good version" made me laugh. I remember the old times. All the viruses on XP... but it used to crash way less that it's predecessors. Vista which was super slow and annoying. Feels like they're making some progress since 7. (Okay, now they're adding more and more data collection and annoyances to it.) But if I look back to Windows 7... I'm not feeling nostalgia 😆

  • Basically yes, Like Netflix, just without Netflix increasing subscription prices every one to two years while removing content I like. And being a for-profit company that makes me pay more and creators earn less. I mean I can afford $30 a month if it gives me all the TV series I like, movies and audiobooks and all the music out there. For all I care it could bill me per view if that gets close to that amount of money... I'm not opposed to paying in the first place... It's just that too much content has become unavailable on Netflix. And I like Spotify, but they're paying artists next to nothing. I don't see any benefit there, If they're ripping off the artists anyways... Why not do it myself, cut out the middle-man and save the bucks?

And all of the services make everything difficult to use, Netflix crapped out after I connected via another internet connection, Disney doesn't work on my old TV. And Star Trek isn't available on either of them. All the data-collecting and DRM shit on top that doesn't allow me to watch full-HD on Linux... Yeah and I want to use a Kodi-Box, not a Fire-TV-Stick.

  • A distributed filesystem with all the content that mankind has ever created. Nothing gets taken down, everything is encoded in HEVC or AV1, 3D and mega-superduper-sound. Streaming clients for every platform and TV. And monetization built in so the content creators have some motivation to upload their content themselves and get payed directly, without labels and other companies in the middle who take the largest cut.

  • In my culture It'd be the other way around. Perfume could be romantic or mean 'you smell'. Chocolade, self-made cake of muffins would be alright. Or something individual, a drawing if you can do it, a nice 3d print or whatever creative hobbies you have. Yeah and somebody said a book. Lots of teachers like to read, and you know what stuff they're interested in... It's probably what they chose to teach. Or just say thank you, you helped me a lot and influenced my life for the better.... You could also instead write it down on a nice card.

  • Usually it's just about the NVidia drivers. I've never had an laptop where those tools detected or installed anything else. I mean all the drivers are supposed to come with the Linux kernel per default, and you don't need to worry.

  • Sounds like an opportunity has opened up to you. And I don't know if you have anything to lose here. I'd take it and go on an adventure.

I mean, don't do it if you got important stuff to finish. Or if you cannot adapt to a new workflow. But -for example- Fedora is super easy to install. And in the long run Linux will save you time and headache and it's tough and somewhat easy to maintain. And you can always delete it and switch back to Windows if you like.

NVidia isn't the best, but lots of people use it and it works somewhat alright.

  • living in 2024 [...] you are not paying attention

On the contrary, I'm paying very good attention. And I'm well prepared. I watch all that mess from far away, and just boot my windows four times a year. That's annoying enough for me.

I was looking for a more specific answer than really exists

Yeah, you can't look for the answer that pleases you. At least not if objective reality exists. You either look for an answer that is true, or you don't need to bother looking if you know what you want to believe beforehand.

  • But it's true. They (like everyone else) want to sell you their newest product. That is how capitalism works. That's how they make money. But here it's the other way around. You are the product. Still, you need to be upgraded to the newest version, so the newest data trickles in, the newest advertising is possible.

You seem a bit agitated. But it is how it is. Pick your poison. Be it Windows 10, 11, MacOS or Linux.

  • Hehe, no worries. I think the community needs to stick together. I used to do (voluntary) computer support once a week at university before I moved, now I occasionally do it here. It's always nice being able to help people ...Or in your case at least trying... To me, it's way more fun than discussing politics or the latest news, anyways. And I mean I'm no exception. I also sometimes need support, ask questions about a new distro or get my itches scratched by people who solve my issues on Github.

  • Sorry I have no idea. It's been ages since I last bought a mainboard and that one was recommended in a computer magazine... I'd google it. See if other people have issues with it. And I't trust blogs, Reddit and forums more than the traditional compatibility charts.

  • I guess I‘ll start thinking about replacing the mobo

Yeah, I'm slowly getting to the same conclusion. You could try and rip out all other non-essential components to rule them out. If there are any. And go through the BIOS options once more, switch everything to "Other OS" and try the "legacy" modes for ACPI, boot etc. But at this point I somehow doubt any of this will make any difference. Just make sure the next mobo is alright 😆

  • I have another kernel option for you to try: "earlyprintk is useful when the kernel crashes before the normal console is initialized. It is not enabled by default because it has some cosmetic problems."

    • earlyprintk=vga,keep debug
    • earlyprintk=efi,keep or earlyprintk=bios,keep

I'm not sure if it gets you anywhere, but it could make the fist kernel messages show up.

And you could try replacing the acpi=off with acpi=noirq. If it's something with the interrputs, there are extra options like apic=irqfixup or nolapic (mind the difference apic <-> acpi). (Taken from this document)

I had the time to google a bit and I was right, I am about to run out of ideas. There is a good general guide in the arch wiki on how to approach issues:

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/General_troubleshooting#Boot_problems

Maybe also read that, but that's pretty much it.
