  • Uh, no. A character can absolutely just be gay, but the way Netflix does it often feels disingenuous and can absolutely take a person out of the show.

Some characters being gay feels right. Some characters being gay feels fake.

Having this opinion does not make a person homophobic and viewing it in such a light is far too black/white in thinking.

Further, posting something on a public discourse forum and then saying "you do not get to debate" is asanine

  • So Tolkien, maybe. Which makes sense. Thanks!

I tried reading the hobbit when I was about 9, but I have a cognitive issue with repetition, along with moments of overwhelming empathy. The knocking on the door drove me crazy, and I couldn't continue reading. (I remember thinking something like: "leave the poor hobbit alone!" I was a weird kid). I've only watched the movies but I don't remember the lines

  • It's funny that we live in a society where trying to kill yourself is a crime (punishment of which is to be locked up) but also one where if you commit a certain type of crime (or rather, are convicted of committing a certain type of crime) your punishment is to be locked up until you're put to death

    So strange

    Eta: it's like:

"Oh you tried to kill yourself? Jail time!" "Oh you killed someone? DEATH"

They're saying death is only ok when the government does it to you (barring natural death and even then hospitals try everything they can to keep people alive, even those who are well past their expiration date and have given up on life a long time ago)

  • When I went back to the dentist after skipping 2 years I had 9 cavities. As embarrassing as that is... I'm also trained as a dental assistant.

My unsolicited advice: Go now, it can only get worse

  • We were in the market for a new car about 6 months ago. I wanted to buy used, but a used version of the exact same car (except a year or two older, obviously with mileage) was roughly the same price as the new car on the lot. Needless to say we bought the new car

  • I'm a little confused by the lesbian assessment given that they have cubs. Surely if they were sexually attracted only to other females they'd be cubless?

Maybe they're bi-sexual. Maybe they're sisters. Maybe they're friends. If they're truly lesbian then those cubs were either adopted or artificially inseminatesd by a zoo because...

Yeah I'm over thinking this, aren't I? Fine, lesbian bears and their cubs why not

  • I'm not a linguist, but I can answer partially. Women have their own: chick, dame, gurl come to mind. While dame is antiquated, I still occasionally hear "chick", and "gurl" is used somewhat like "bro" in a close-friends-one-of-us kind of way

I suspect that, depending on how things progress, words will continue to become more gender neutral. Language is supposed to be fluid and the meaning of words rightly changes over time to reflect the society we live in

And if I had to guess as to why we have so many that are gendered, it would be for men/boys (of the past) to be able to identify whether the person in question is dateable and for women/girls (of the past) to be able to identify if the person in question could be a threat

Times are changing, though, and hopefully we can continue to go into a more inclusive/neutral direction. Back when I was a teen alot of this was unheard of. I didn't even know trans people existed until my 20's. It took me a while to wrap my head around it, but I've mostly caught up and try to use the appropriate language where applicable

  • He tried sending the same message to 39 women, (assuming that the message would be sent seperately) only to realize that they were all added to a group chat. It dawned on him that each woman could see that he had sent the same message to everyone in the group. He realized the error of his ways, and swift departed. (Presumably out of embarrasment)

  • I like the use of "guy" as unisex. Like the word "dude"

    He's a dude, she's a dude, they're all dudes

I use "guys" plural to refer to any group of people, including all women/girl groups. I know saying "that guy" still means "that man/boy" but I'm hoping people will adopt it as completely unisex

A guy can dream (I'm a cis woman btw)
