  • Further down the rabbit hole. Seems like they're doing everything they can to get to the bottom as fast as possible.

  • The OP is complaining about all the Reddit bitching on his front page. There is some control over the looks of one's front page in profile settings. If set to "All", then yeah there's going to be a lot of stuff outside of interest on the front page. My front page is set to "Subscribed" so I have to intentionally look for that stuff if I want to see it.

The way to use Lemmy is to subscribe to communities with content of interest and use the the subscribed view. Maybe this is more a case of someone new to Lemmy not understanding the best way to use Lemmy.

  • Exactly, not a hypothetical question here, we have historical evidence to show it's fact.

  • I tried going to threads.net on desktop browser just to spy on the enemy. uBlock Origin didn't like it one bit, blocked a bunch of stuff that wouldn't let it open (I'm running a slightly more aggressive blocker configuration). I'm scared to trust it and see what it looks like.

  • The recent patches to World made a huge difference.

I'm on lemm.ee and the admin there is running on the latest release candidates right now. Night and day difference for me since getting past 0.18.0, but also I'm on desktop browser. I don't know how many of us there are compared to mobile users, but I think most people just want a good mobile app. Make sure you send them to a good instance. If they get on a janky one they'll think it represents the whole thing. Otherwise no need to explain the whole centralized/decentralized thing, probably just confuse the average person.

  • Looks like the rush is over, the total users number has flattened out according the-federation.info/platform/73. Probably a good thing since it was getting a bit hectic with the sudden demand. Anyway this instance is performing very nicely on desktop browser for me, very little lag or delay anywhere. It's a pleasant experience. Thanks to the admin for an excellent server, also nice you're on the latest updates.

  • This is how the tried and true agenda goes using Meta's threads.net and the Fediverse as an example.

    • Meta's site gets wildly popular because of corporate backing
    • Meta's site does something on purpose to cause poor operability with the rest of the Fediverse
    • People not on Meta's site can no longer properly communicate with people on Meta's site, they go to Meta's site
    • The Fediverse gets fractured and nobody cares because everyone is on Meta's site
    • Meta's site is the sole survivor and the rest of the platform dies.
    • Meta enshitifies their site as corporations typically do (think Twitter)

So yeah, ban the shit out of them. The proper term is defederate them, but do it with extreme prejudice.

  • So Meta is up and running now on threads.net, news to me. Hell yeah, ban the crap out of them.

  • That article has been posted a lot lately. It's a looming threat, Meta is coming to destroy the Fediverse in a preemptive strike. It would take a long time for the Fediverse to grow big enough to threaten them, but they're not taking any chances.

  • Haha man, as the wise philosopher Pauly Shore once said, "dude, you're harshing my mellow." So yeah we don't want those guys doing that to us.

  • Well you didn't donate any money, but you donated your content and your time, especially if you were moderating. As a Reddit user they pretty much own you.

Spending time on a thing is really no different than spending money on a thing. Everybody's time is worth something.

Everything you donate here goes to supporting a community, everything you donate there goes to lining fatcat pockets.

  • For sure if they want that content they can just go there. Lets not turn our cozy little café into a McDonalds as you say.

  • It's been an often employed corporate tactic, embrace a technology and make it popular, extend it so outside interests can't employ it, then squeeze all the profit they can which inevitably kills it.

  • It's a slippery slope down the path of corporate enshitification. I say we shouldn't let them in and others like them to start.

  • It just baffles me why he would buy Twitter in the first place and even more so why he paid what he did for it. PayPal -> Tesla -> SpaceX -> Twitter. How does that make any sense in any way. So there's that from the start, but then why is he firing a torpedo into it. Was his secret plan to bulldoze Twitter from the start? That's a lot to pay for revenge.

  • Normally it's pretty quick, but sometimes it can take a few minutes. Other times it seems to get stuck. If you cycle it one or more times it may hook up right away. Doesn't matter though, you still see a community's posts even though it says pending, really just an indication issue. They should get it working better pretty quick as Lemmy develops.

  • Yeah @sunaurus@lemm.ee is really optimizing the hell out of this instance. A driver for me right now is he's running the release candidate for 0.18.1 and it's a huge improvement for me over 0.18.0. He's also a dev on the project so he's getting fixes in as well.

  • We have more freedom here, don't have to worry about stepping on any corporate toes. Also the viewership is a lot smaller and the people that are here are more interested in actual information and discussion. I don't think that will change a huge amount, but as the platform grows we may see more shitposts.

Also it takes a little more effort to deal with the decentralized platform here. It kind of weeds out the user base. I mean I've been astonished by the lack of effort seen in some Reddit posts. For example posting a question that can be answered straight away with a simple search.

  • Yeah there's a checkbox for it under profile settings. There's a ton of great communities, I've subscribed to around 40. Once you get a good set of communities can just set your default to "Subscribed" in profile settings. That will be your front page. You don't really want to use "Local" because it may not be very active. "All" has a lot of stuff in it you may not want to see. There's a few communities where I don't ever want to see their content. See lemmyverse.net for community info. There's a lot of good communities on kbin as well (you can access those from Lemmy and vice versa).
