  • That would simply be another front page sort option. Hey I'm all for that. Right now we have a healthy list, but I'd welcome "custom" or "smart" as well.

  • I have four due to instance shopping, but there's only one I use all the time and one I use as an alternate. Would be nice to be able to synchronize them.

NSFW I don't care about, it's enabled. I only browse stuff by subscription where that stuff rarely comes up. Can't imagine the garbage I'd have to sift through setting my front page to "All".

  • I actually wondered about that. The way instances share data and store it is all pretty black box to me.

  • That would be very handy, I have a couple instances I use and would like to synchronize them. Also synchronize the inbox and profile data. That's something that should be in the code base.

  • "All" as in a lot of them? There's not many as far as I know unless you're counting mobile apps for Lemmy. There's a good range of Lemmy mobile apps already and more coming. But then it's just different ways of accessing the same content.

If you're talking about kbin versus Lemmy, I think Lemmy is more feature rich, but kbin has a nicer looking layout. Even so they're both Fediverse platforms so again it's just different ways of accessing the same content.

In any case the number of users here on Lemmy/kbin is a tiny fraction of Reddit. They have like half a billion monthly active where Lemmy/kbin has maybe 100k. Though the content is as much better as the difference in user numbers. It's mostly noise on Reddit like low effort memes, shitposts, astroturfing, bot spam. We don't have that here...yet. Don't know how long it will stay that way, but I'll take it long as I can get it.

  • Haven't deleted mine, but haven't been back there either. If I deleted it, I wouldn't miss it. Though at some point I image the account will expire due to inactivity.

  • Subscriber numbers you see on the community page are local to that instance. I'm not sure if that's by design or not, but it really should show global numbers not local ones. If you want to see global numbers look up the community on lemmyverse.net/communities

That particular community is unusual in that pretty much all of the subscribers are local to the feddit.uk instance. Most of the time subscribers are spread across many instances.

  • Our humble admin is pinning this post only to get a feel for what users think about the idea so all opinions are under consideration. We haven't done any "amputating" yet and may not ever need to. As mentioned in the OP, Threads has not actually federated with anyone yet (as far as I know) and even if they have, Lemmy is fairly insulated from Mastodon at this point.

This is this not a case of "pre-crime". Meta has a proven track record along with similar corporations in how they operate and the ways in which they monopolize their space. There's no doubt the limb is gangrene.

  • Exactly, if we want them in our space why put up with the growing pains of the Fediverse, just go to them and forget Lemmy, Mastodon, etc. We need to be our own space or why exist at all. As said before, if you want their content just go to their sites.

  • Not being up on (or caring about) what evil Meta is up to I was wondering how they got 90M users overnight, that splains it.

  • At least they use car mounted cameras and actually drive the car. Cracks me up on old movies when they're doing front shots and you can clearly tell there's a screen behind the car playing the background.

Anyway it's probably just actors failing to act naturally. If you think about it when you first get in the car you always start with both hands on the wheel, then after going a ways you go to a more natural position. They get in the car put their hands on the wheel and director says action, haven't been at the wheel long enough to get comfortable.

  • I'm going to have a go at explaining how to use Lemmy in a simple way.

You only need one good instance to access all of Lemmy, but it can be nice to have an alternate in case the primary goes offline for some reason. For best network performance try instances in your region. You can sort instances by country here; https://the-federation.info/platform/73 When you find one that works well for you, make it your regular login instance.

Once you find a home instance, go to lemmyverse.net/communities to find communities of interest. Copy the link on lemmyverse by clicking on it (i.e. !technology@lemmy.ml) then paste into the search box on the communities page in Lemmy. Click on the listing from the search results then select the Subscribe button. It may show "Pending" for a short time then turn to "Joined". If doesn't change right away don't worry about it. You're in even though it may look stuck.

The front page view defaults to Local, you don't want that. Go to your profile settings and set the view to "Subscribed" (you could use "All", but your front page will have a ton of junk you don't want to see).

That's it, you're ready to use Lemmy. Of course this is for desktop browser. I'm not familiar with the Liftoff mobile app for Lemmy so I don't have directions for that.

Additional; there's other things to know about such as federation which involves blocked and linked instances, but to start just avoid communities on beehaw.org since that instance is one known to block other legit instances. If there is a community on beehaw.org you really want to interact with, you have to check your login instance is not blocked there. There's a procedure for that, but I'll spare you the information overload.

Okay, hope that helps and enjoy!

  • We’re a bunch of geeks with anarchist leanings, and so probably wouldn’t switch to Threads anyway.

    You know me, haha

  • I feel strongly against corporate involvement with the Fediverse so I'm going to have a pronounced reaction to it.

Hell no to federating with Threads. Yeah they're a different platform and they have not joined the Fediverse yet, but they're using ActivityPub and they could do all kinds of nasty things with it (as evil profit mongering corporations always do).

For future reference, say no to any kind of corporate influence.

  • It's like a scam isn't it, use chat bots to make your site look huge to sell high dollar add space and get big money from investors. It's almost kind of comical, spending all that money to advertise to a bunch of bots.

  • I’ve been here since mid June and have made 264 posts,

I have almost 300 comments over three weeks now. I actually had Lemmy bookmarked for some time, but started participating after giving Reddit the punt. That's way higher post frequency than before. Yeah it's great feeling like you can say reasonable stuff without coming under attack.

  • Yeah I'm one of the 90% here, except for the Linux part, FreeBSD man. No problem with that and it would fine with me if it doesn't change. Talking to my peeps here.

  • That would be very cool to print a new car, but realistically it's cheaper to buy one if you consider the cost of your time and materials. I mean you have to render all the parts and assemble the thing. Then there's parts like wiring harnesses you still have to make by hand. Still how awesome would that be drive a car you made yourself.

As far as I know, generally you can register a home built car in the USA, but it varies by state. Different states have different regulations. Typically you just have to jump through some inspection hoops. Not too long ago I converted a couple off-road motorcycles to street legal in Nevada and it wasn't difficult. Though in states like New York and California a gas powered car may have additional smog regs impossible to get past. A lot easier for an electric one, no smog regs.

As far as the copying, you would only be infringing on any patents or trademarks that may exist. Those are regional and I don't believe they apply to personal use. Even if they did, I doubt any car maker is going after someone who makes a personal copy of their car. Now if you tried to produce and sell copies, that could get you a lot of attention. But even then it depends where you're doing it. In China they mass produce exact copies of popular western cars even down to the trademarks, but they don't export them and China doesn't care so there's nothing to stop them.

  • It would be convenient to have a Fediverse wide login, but it would carry too much baggage in terms of overhead and security. They'd have to carry the whole of the user database across all of the Fediverse, not really feasible. Then there's security concerns over sensitive data like email and passwords. So probably not something that could ever happen.

A sync feature between instances might be do-able. Could be handy. I have a couple instances where I'd like to sync community subscriptions.
