I wasn’t familiar with Ember mugs; but I have a USB coffee mug warmer at my desk which does the same thing provided you don’t need mobility, and was like $20 I think. I love that thing.

Custom-made ear plugs. Even if you only wear ear plugs occasionally (I do when in a noisy hotel, or when a neighbor goes a bit too crazy), they are so worth having.

Basically you go to an audiologist and they put something kinda liquid in each of your ears to take a mold of your ear canals. A couple of weeks later, you have plastic earplugs that have the exact shape of your inner ears.

Upsides: • They work, always. I would typically use wax or silicon disposable ear plugs before that, and sometimes in the middle of the night they might move and let the sound in; those don’t. Also, foam disposable ear plugs don’t stay in my ear, don’t ask me why. • They never hurt. Since disposable ear plugs get shoved into your inner ear until they take the shape, they continuously push against the walls of your ear canals. I would often feel kinda bruised after using them for a long time. • They are crazy comfortable. Put your ear on a pillow, and you barely feel them at all. • But do they block too much sound? That’s up to you. Basically, you choose the level of noise you want to keep out, which I believe is achieved by using different kinds of plastic.

They’re not a trivial purchase (I think mine cost $150), but then you use them for decades, so it’s definitely worth it. It was a stupid purchase in my case, because I bought them on a whim out of anger against my neighbor’s party one night; but they’ve followed me everywhere since!

(FYI, “there are dozens of us” is an Arrested Development quote. Your questions are definitely valid, but I’m not sure the poster of the comment actually meant much by it, besides the joke.)

So, they’re spiking on it, which isn’t particularly surprising at this stage. In fact they have to since they’re a public company, they can’t make announcements that they’re spending R&D on something, and not spend it, that would be SEC fraud. I’m still not buying that it’s in their interest enough that they would actually put it out there. This feels like such a heavy engineering lift, for little upside besides the compelling differentiation story to tell.

Also, based on their communications so far, they mean to federate with Mastodon, but they don’t care much about Lemmy. Which makes sense, their shareholders have massively heard of Mastodon, but not Lemmy. Even if they release something, I bet it will be federation with some specific Mastodon servers that they know will treat them well.

Maybe I’m wrong, that’s completely possible. If they start federating with Lemmy.world, I’m squarely in the “then we should defederate now” camp. But at this point this feels like so much hot air and speculation, that I’m not even sure why it’s being talked about so much.

For more clarity: the amount needed to overdose on acetaminophen is quite low, you can enter liver failure quite easily if you overdo it. People have been known to sometimes take more acetaminophen when they start feeling the resulting liver pains, making the problem gradually worse, and sometimes ending up dying from it.

So, if you’ve already taken acetaminophen as part of some medication, it’s not just that you don’t need to take more, it’s actually dangerous if you do.

Also, when someone else wears a mask anywhere for any reason, I always ask “oh, would you like me to wear a mask?” I never ask why they do, I assume they have a good reason.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve been thinking too. Zelenskyy had to know that a NATO invitation right now is not realistic. I think it’s posturing to invite constituents in other countries to also act offended that Ukraine isn’t helped more, which then would be in the form of more war support, since it can’t really be much else. Can’t blame him for always taking all opportunities to get more support.

I remember finding out about wireless internet from an Intel TV ad. There was somebody with a laptop, browsing internet (probably an AOL page or something like that considering the era) sitting on a chair in the middle of a stadium, with no cable to be seen.

I thought “well that’s stupid, I know you can avoid the power cable for a while if there’s a battery, but if he’s browsing the internet, there has to be a network cable”. But the ad ran over and over on TV, clearly insisting there was no cable, so I was like “hm wait…”.

Eventually I read about wireless networks somewhere a couple of weeks later, and suddenly it all made sense.

The way I’ve seen this done before, it was not for a password, but for a token entered after the password was entered. No, the token is not encrypted, and therefore it would not be secure for the service to use it as a password.

About the Lemmy.world situation, here’s where I draw my understanding from: https://lemmy.world/post/1274909 Meta said they wouldn’t even start looking at it before being at 1 billion users, so they are not going to be testing anything any time soon; which is also why I’m not buying too strongly that they actually intend to do it. I commented on the post with my thinking. Once they’re that far along (if they even get there), they will have proven their currently implemented strategy, that they don’t actually need to federate with anything to do the Twitter-but-better that they clearly set out to do. I’m totally guessing though so I could be wrong.

Hm, my understanding from Lemmy.world’s post was “guys, we’re years away from it if it ever happens, maybe we should chill until we learn more?”

My personal bet is that Threads will never actually implement ActivityPub anyway. The announcement of it sounds great for shareholders to see a differentiation with Twitter on the short term, but making it really has so many uncontrollable scale hurdles that I’d bet it will be given up before it’s real.

But whether my guess is correct or not, Lemmy.world admin’s point is factually correct: right now, this whole thing is just a lot of hot air.

(Also, I’m intrigued, I think you might be the only person, when moving instance out of disagreement with an admin, to join one where the admins are known to be Uyghur genocide deniers and pro-North-Korea. With the point of Lemmy to have very diverse viewpoints, obviously that’s all your choice and you should be where you think you should be, but of all instances out there to join to seek alignment with admins, I wouldn’t have thought Lemmy.ml would be one people would turn to a lot, since it’s been controversial exactly for that, and there are many many others. Heh, you do you.)

I sometimes watch long YouTube videos on my phone while in my living room, where my huge screen also is. Don’t ask me why, but I like it.

Thanks for that, I definitely learned some. I’m not surprised that it takes some smart thinking to get this to even be remotely possible, and it’s interesting to read what smart thinking goes into it. I was at Lake Mead recently, and it was impressive to be explained how much it had receded over the past few years, and how much of a strain on it Vegas keeps putting despite the mitigation. I wonder how long before it just runs out, if it does; and what happens next.

Exactly. And if one of them ends up sucking for any reason, you can drop it and be very glad that there were several. That’s very much the point.

I want to make sure people have a good experience here, but on this one, I really don’t get what people find so difficult about it…

I remember the movie really ramping up towards unconventional things, and then ending in disappointingly conventional ways. “And then the son with whom they got separated to a near-certain death is alive after all, and they find each other and get reunited.”

Also, as has been discussed to death at the time, the absolute lack of build-up towards the resolution, which leaves it with a taste of “wait, so why exactly did I watch what happens to this bunch of randos?”

I have nothing against people who liked it, but the final act felt like such a let-down compared to the beginning and middle of it, that I can’t really remember it positively.
