  • You jest but this implies everything is fine... Now.

  • I'd argue that the most inhuman behavior is coming from the Texas legislature.

  • I approve this pedantry because I too am not a scientist 👍

  • I was going to say... It is kidnapping. It's just state-sanctioned kidnapping.

  • I hear the void is lovely this time of year.

  • Tell me you're planning an insurrection without telling me you're planning an insurrection.

  • The best defense against measles is to not have Republican parents.

  • They're not just bismuth! They're bismuth and selenium with some oxygen mixed in (to connect those elements together, I think).

The reason I point this out is because this means that not only can the chips of the future perform blazingly fast calculations they can also cure your tummy ache and prevent dandruff!

Once this technology becomes mainstream it'll be bismuth as usual. We'll all be getting down to bismuth.

A whole new era of puns is upon us! The product of the selenium.

  • Just an FYI: In Florida (at least) a similar bill was passed not because of any concerns about lab-grown meat but because loads and loads of rich people keep small amounts of cattle on their property which gives them massive property tax breaks (money that most of these counties desperately need). There's literally over a million cows living like cow kings in Florida.

I get what you're saying about factory farms but I just wanted to point out the truth: While those conditions are common for other farm animals I'm not aware of it being that common for cows (in the US) 🤷

As far as I know the factory farms that are like that are all related to poultry and swine (the people that run them).

  • Reminder: The Bill of Rights (where we get the 1st Amendment) applies to all persons living and residing in the United States. Not just citizens.

  • For a history of Dumb Restrictions on Media (aka DRM):

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management

This fight goes way, way back. Microsoft worked with the media industry in the early 2000s to create a fully-encrypted media input/output pipeline for PCs in order to combat Linux adoption. Microsoft knew that it would be impossible for open source software to decrypt the media streams without making the encryption keys available so they went way out of their way to make sure things like HDCP would "protect" the media being played back on a PC from "illegal" copying.

It starts with the TPM module in your motherboard/processor and continues outward all the way though to your HDMI monitor (which has to have the hardware keys necessary to decrypt the content).

BTW: The keys for HDMI HDCP have long since been leaked so you can now cheaply and easily buy all sorts of HDMI capture devices on the cheap from places like AliExpress (they don't ask any questions). Get one of those and your PC won't even know that you're capturing screenshots.

  • I highly recommend not eating your keyboard. The most commonly-used macros probably taste like finger cheese.

  • Forget small phones... I want bigger phones! Why do we keep making phones that appear to be made to appease people with small pockets‽

Bigger screens are better! Give me a great big tri-fold phone with a week-long battery (as long as it's under 10lbs it won't be a problem!). Actually, fuck that: Where are our backpack phones? We used to have them in WW2 and now we have the technology to make them even better!

I want the power to unfurl my monster phone to turn it into a portable 3-monitor gaming rig. Make it run regular Linux too so I can actually automate things and decide where I want to store my stuff (not in Google or Apple's clouds!).

  • Actually, the remedy Social Security needs is to remove the income cap. Elon Musk pays just as much into social security as I do: ~$10,900

It's because there's a cap: $176,100. Once you earn that much in income you don't have to pay into social security anymore! It's ridiculous!

Basically, the richer you are, the less you're paying into social security as a percentage of your income. It's the opposite of progressive (just like HSAs).

Remove the cap and people like Musk will be paying millions into Social Security every year. It'll make it solvent again in no time at all.
