  • I've been using opensuse for years and not found a solution to this. I have a new appreciation for apt and my next OS will definitely be debian-based.

  • Another thing on the 2025 roadmap - currently the topics are under control of the instance admin but soon any account will be able to create a topic and add communities to it. People will be able to join and leave topics, just like they currently do for communities.

  • PieFed dev here.

PieFed is closer to Lemmy, yeah. Microblogs (i.e. the ability to follow mastodon profiles and have their posts show up in your timeline) are on the roadmap for this year.

Currently, Mastodon users can follow Piefed accounts and the posts from PieFed will show up in the Mastodon user's timeline. Those posts, viewed in mastodon, can be replied to there and the the reply will show up in PieFed. But not the other way around.

  • That was my first too! Followed by

  • Try Midnight Commander

  • all the apps interconnecting

Evangelists say this but that's not actually what happens in practice. It might one day. ActivityPub is not a protocol, it's the concept of a protocol. Each platform uses AP slightly differently so there are subtle and big incompatibilities everywhere.

There are two main islands of interoperability. There's Mastodon and friends (Pixelfed, Misskey, Akomma, etc) then there's Lemmy and friends (Mbin, PieFed).

Mbin and Friendica do the best at federating with everything but they have shortcomings in other ways.

Just try stuff and explore, until you find a set of compromises you can live with. Take your time. I have a Mastodon account and a PieFed account.

  • Just to confirm - I tried the 7b and it was fast but pretty untrustworthy. OPs 24 GB if vram should be enough to run a medium sized version, tho...

  • It's a developed country, lol

  • It's on PieFed's roadmap for this year.

  • Fedigrow@lemm.ee is the mis-named one. "To discuss how to grow and manage communities on Lemmy" is not really about evangelizing the whole fediverse to people outside. It could be more outward focused, but if you look at the posts in that community you'll see it's very much not what is being discussed.

  • Yeah, that's not quite the same. fedigrow has an inward focus.

  • Some instances have blocked the furtherist-left instances and banned the most abrasive users from those that remain. It's not at all how jeffw described.

  • Still ongoing, but basic functionality is working.

  • Second Amendment (guns), I guess

  • Yep, that could well be a bug. I just tried creating this post with no issues but maybe when it comes in from Lemmy something different happens...

    Thanks @blaze@lemmy.zip
