  • Which for me is just pressing enter.

    I remember the old joke when Ubuntu was the hot new thing: If you put grain around the enter key, a chicken can install it.

    Nowadays it's true for every graphical installer. Hell, even NixOS can be installed by pressing enter (though good luck doing anything else after boot if you're a basic user).

  • Eh... What? That nevet happened to me. With every new laptop I just turn on Bluetooth, connect my mouse and am done with it.

    Did the users you mention accidentally compile Gentoo or something?

  • You should've seen some of the Windows machines I had. Like 25% of them ran horribly and Linux was actually the perfect solution to a laptop I'd otherwise replace with a different model.

    Not that Linux is perfect or anything, I have as much issues with it as with Windows. But that's kinda my point, both suck, might as well use the one that doesn't spy on me.

  • Their filament sucks, the only thing good about it is the RFID that tells AMS what colour it is.

    If they do official support for people with developer mode turned on that's fine by me and the issue is pretty much solved, I don't mind losing cloud connectivity if I get full control over the printer and can do my own cloud if I want.

  • That doesn't help at all, I'd say. Most people won't ever create communities.

  • Read only instance would put them off too. The best solution, IMO:

    • create a pool of instances that will act as the default ones
    • when creating an account, create it on one of the instances, redirect the user there
    • add an option to migrate an account to a different instance in case the user wants to choose a different one after a month or so
  • Nah, this is the year of Linux on desktop for everyone. The old Mayans foretold so.

  • Pff, just use the numbers directly:

     php

    ${1} = "value";
    ${2} = "DOGE";

    That makes it possible to do stuff like:

     php

    for (${152} = 1; ${152} <= 2; ${152}++) {
        ${666} = $${152};
        print(${666});
    }

    This is a valid code, btw.

  • Exceptions are now illegal and therefore won't occur, so no need to check for them

    Ah, I see you've met C++ developers.

  • Yes. That's exactly how we got the first image generating AIs - people took a huge amount of pictures and described in detail what's in there. That's how AI knows how to generate "a cat in a space suit standing on a moon" - there were a lot of pictures described "cat", "space suit", "standing", "moon" etc. and the AI distilled the common part of each image matching the description.

    And there are plenty use-cases to have a description of what's on an image. For example for searching through images based on what's in there.

  • Well, some jobs are probably being replaced. Like, I can imagine someone being paid to describe in detail what's in a picture and writing it down would be replaced pretty quickly.

    But if the article means programmers, devops, sysadmins etc., then hell no, there's no way the current iteration of AI can replace them and instead of spreading misinformation, the article authors should focus on real reasons the layoffs happen.

    But that doesn't bring as many interactions as doom news of companies replacing us with a smart text predict software, does it?

  • The year of Linux happened a long time ago. I assume you mean the year of Linux on desktop, in which case yes, it's been foretold.

  • Loved that game! Well, something with Babiš is long overdue, especially since he's gonna win the next elections.

  • What did you use? I usually use Syncthing to get my files onto/from the Deck. I also use it to sync my mods, that way I have the same experience whether I turn on the PC or the Deck.

  • You can't, you have to move instances.

  • Can it hurt you, though? My guess would be every sane compiler and interpreter optimizes this.

  • Well, not what I was pointing at. It's pretty much an American thing to just use the preinstalled messaging app and pretend there are no others, that's why the whole blue bubble / green bubble drama is pretty much exclusive to the US.
