  • Wow who would even say that? That would be pretty much as illogical as it can get

  • ... which makes no difference either way because science can be done without including any person of any particular gender.

  • Please elaborate.

  • Android does not collect any telemetry, GApps does. Pure Android as developed by the AOSP is fully free and open-source software and does not communicate with any vendor's services, which is why there are completely private Android distributions like LineageOS or e/OS. Android is NOT Google, it is developed and maintained by the Open Handset Alliance. That most people happen to run modified versions of it like Samsung's Android flavour or that they happen to have GApps like Google Play Services installed is the actual problem.

  • I cannot confirm. Galaxy Fold 4 costs as much as the most expensive iPhone, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra still costs more than the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus

  • Who woulge? "Glass tower" It is my airplane

  • Exynos is better for consumers though, because you can install custom ROMs on these SoCs, which is not possible on the Snapdragon Galaxy phones

  • I don't think that that's going to be a problem. We have a long history of dealing with such verification. What is important is that people trust science and scientific institutions, and sooner rather than later, in-depth analysis of devices conducted by experts will be able to provide security and credibility for the layman to rely on without the need to run tests themselves. This is basically how the privacy and cryptography branches of hardware and software engineering have operated for decades now.

  • Not necessarily. There's always the option to port something like LineageOS yourself, which is in fact where most of the ROMs for a much larger selection of devices comes from than what is officially supported by LineageOS. This is of course not for the average user, but it is possible. Except for some devices like the newest Samsung flagships that are based on Snapdragon. With the Exynos variants, porting AOSP and operating systems based on it is possible.

  • LineageOS without GApps is literally as secure as GrapheneOS

  • Proprietary software should NOT be taught in schools! We already have way too much of that

  • Probabilistic computing based on statistical models has value and will be useful. Pretending it is a world changing AI tech was a gift from day 1.

That is literally modelling how your and all our brains work, so no, neuromorphic computing / approximate computing is still the way to go. It's just that neuromorphic computing does not necessarily equal LLMs. Paired with powerful mixed analogue and digital signal chips based on photonics, we will hopefully at some point be able to make neural networks that can scale the simulation of neurons and synapses to a level that is on par or even superior to thr human brain.

  • This is literally just whataboutism. You must be degenerate if you think that there's a correlation between the research performance of the listed countries and their patent laws. There are dozens of more useful and much more relevant indicators for why these nations are disadvantaged in this regard. But just stick to your belief that North Korea is what it is because it doesn't have patent laws lol.

Also, for you to better understand the harm that software patents caused and are causing, consider reading Free Software, Free Society by Richard Stallman.

  • Whoa so much toxicity, what's going on here?

  • Well don't forget that humanity always has one last trump, and that is geo-engineering. At the moment, that is deemed too dangerous and the current effects of climate change do not yet justify it, but eventually, the large-scale modification of our atmosphere might be a method employed to offset the greenhouse gas impact.

  • Many people have already given up, which is a very common sentiment here on Lemmy. They're waiting for "humanity to die". Personally, I find such helplessness and indifference to human life and civilisation appalling. In the end, our species will do much better without such people, so I am considering them legitimate casualties of climate change. I will not miss them.
