  • I'm speculating, but at this point I don't think the remaining Reddit protesters are doing this with the goal of having Spez reverse course. My guess is that they know its a lost cause, and are just operating out of spite, i.e. you destroyed something I care about (reddit) so I'm going to destroy something you care about (willingness of advertisers to participate in a hostile platform).

From a practical perspective I totally agree though. Frankly, this whole debacle has made me realize that I stopped actually enjoying Reddit in like 2017 - there was just nothing good to move to before the explosion of Lemmy this year.

  • I agree. I'm an engineer and have left companies for doing things I think are unethical. I understand its not always black and white, but at the end of the day, if you're doing something bad and you know its bad, "just doing my job" does not mean you're not complicit and at least partially responsible.

Especially if you work at a place like Google - its not like the only choices are either implementing this or starving. There are plenty of employment opportunities out there for people at the top of the industry that don't involve making the world a worse place for everyone to live in.

  • All of your whataboutism is pointless. The Republican party's position is that climate change isn't real. There's no two sides - nothing Democrats do is causing Republicants to say climate change is a hoax. Republicans are saying reality is fake all on their own. They are wrong. And they are threatening to kill people for saying reality is real. They are wrong about climate change.

  • Hate to say it, but I think you're giving the average person way too much credit. Most people are just not that smart.

"Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of them are stupider than that." - George Carlin

Average and below internet users are not the kind of people you meet on Lemmy. They are people like the aging Gen-Xer who doesn't know the difference between "the internet" and a web browser, or the kid whose parents shoved a tablet in their face to get them to be quiet for an hour.

Most people want computers to be an appliance like a washing machine - the thought that they can shape their own experience on their phone or computer never even occurs to them.

  • I'm struggling to find a source for this fact, but I read somewhere that his refusal to smile in pictures was due to his mother. She was emotionally unstable and made derogatory comments about his appearance and smile at a young age. As a result, Lovecraft became extremely self conscious about his smile and teeth, and as a result we have very few pictures today of him smiling.

  • The article explicitly states one of the evaluation criteria is as follows:

So we consider inclusiveness in state laws by measuring protections against discrimination, as well as voting rights.

I'm guessing this is what led to the outcome the post title is highlighting.
