  • I like to cook, and I like big cooks. My favorite thing to do on a Sunday is wake up and immediately start dinner. Fresh bread, slow roasted meats, things that take time in the kitchen. It's not weird for me to spend hours in there, and a kitchen needs a hard floor because carpet will just absorb spills and become disgusting really quickly. My old ass gets really sore after 5 hours standing barefoot on hard tile, so I have some house shoes that never go outside and help me stay comfortable.

  • Companies: "You are nothing but a cog in a machine. You will be placed in the machine if and only if you help the machine generate maximum profit. If your presence ever causes the machine to generate less than maximum profit you will be summarily discarded."

Employees: "Okay, so you try to get the maximum profit for you and I try to get the maximum profit for me."

  • there's a push lately to equate being christian with being a violent right-wing bigot by violent right-wing bigots who want to paint any opposition to their bigotry and violence as some sort of movement against christianity. But the thing is, I'm against violent, bigoted Muslims too. And violent, bigoted Atheists. And violent, bigoted Jews. I haven't met any violent, bigoted Jains but there's no river long enough that doesn't have a bend in it and if I ever met a violent, bigoted Jain I'd be against them too. Bigotry isn't necessary to Christianity and Christianity isn't necessary to bigotry. The question to these jurors was "Can you apply the law as-written to this case" and several people said "My religious beliefs prevent me from applying the law equally to homosexuals, who I believe are an underclass that needs to be punished."

Bet if it was a cop on trial they'd have no problem kicking someone off the jury for their ACAB tattoo, or if they were Mennonites who believe that violence is wrong in all cases.

  • everything is a fucking baby nowadays. quick hypothetical: you're in a burning building, in that building is a single two year old, and a cooler with 10,000 fertilized embryos in it. You can only grab one. Do you rescue the two year old, or 10,000 "babies"? If one embryo = one child then it's pretty obvious what the right decision is, right?

  • when you're a democratic politician every election year either you win or your stock portfolio does. they have absolutely no skin in the game, no one is taking their rights, no one is holding rallies to deport them or have them all declared child molesters. it's a game to them. it has been since forever, and it was never more evident than when Hillary Clinton gambled with our prosperity and lost by elevating Donald Trump thinking that she could use the threat of his presidency to motivate democratic voters without having to actually give us anything.

  • In turn of the century Sicily at least the mafia did all of that. They were the de facto government and provided services. It was much less like it was in the new world where organized crime developed under a functioning democratic government and operated in secret and much more like an informal feudal state persisting past the unification of Italy that really did have (and require) popular support.

  • wer and wife

TIL the etymology of how we talk about shapeshifters in folk myth. Dope, thank you!

"Working late one night in the lab, Guy Fellows was bitten by a radioactive human being. Now he seems like an ordinary person, but under the full moon he undergoes a transformation and become a wereman! All the powers of an adult male human, trapped inside the frail shell of an adult male human, he is Wereman!"

  • This and absolutely this. We've completely ignored the idea of geographical regions having a common interest and bastardized the concept of districts into

    1. shoving all of your opponents into one district that only gets one vote
    2. slicing up areas that are dominated by friendlies into as many districts as possible
    3. in competitive areas, try to shove your opponents into districts that are already lost to you and create narrow bridges through opposing districts linking friendly districts. Essentially, go on a walkabout through the state collecting votes.

There's even a game you can play where you control redistricting for a hypothetical area. Given the same population, you can draw the maps such that election winners roughly match the proportions of voters, then to give full control to one side, then to give full control to the other side. The idea is to show you how the people who draw the maps can make voting irrelevant.
