They really need to stop being spineless and so avoidant of offending Biden. He needs to be told to his face by as many democrats as possible to step down, because he literally is too thick and senile to grasp the political "hints" democrats are trying to send him.
Stewart is basically calling for a primary, which we already had, which was known for years ahead of time would happen, which literally anybody could run in, and yet nobody significant seemed interested in running.
...which was also canceled in many states, which you conveniently leave out. Biden was not elected, he is simply the incumbent. His candidacy does not reflect the will of the voters and you know it. The denial needs to stop.
The only reason someone would be advocating for Biden at this point is they want a Trump presidency. Biden cannot win.
She distanced herself when Biden was starting to really commit to the genocide denial, which is probably enough for a lot of people. Biden is pretty extreme, even among democrats who support Israel, and he's been the one driving the wagon. Harris doesn't have the same baggage or history of fantacism when it comes to Israel. She shows more awareness of the generational sea change regarding attitudes towards Israel.
As for the prosecutor thing, I don't think that's something in the same scale of problem as the genocide support. People act like because centerists/"leftists" won't compromise on genocide that means they're unwilling to compromise on everything but that's not true. Such flagrant disregard for basic humanity is a hard limit for many people though. People understand the stakes, Biden's zealotry is just that extreme and alienating. It wouldn't have taken much for him to avoid this problem, but combined with the faltering mental capacity he's too politically toxic at this point to recover.
Polls show that people will vote for the lesser evil that is Harris, they won't vote for the outright evil that is Biden's fanatical, blind support of genocide. The party leadership sees it, they understand the math is against them regardless of how much AIPAC pays them, this doddering debate performance and politically deaf follow-up was the tipping point.
So the Democratic right-wing ignoring and supressing the center of their constituency again and pretending they can win without compromise. Sounds about right.
More importantly, there's nothing you can do to convince someone who's dumb enough to vote for Trump, not to. This is why chasing "swing" voters is a really terrible strategy and always has been. There's literally nothing Trump could say or do to alienate the voters he has now, no one is undecided on Trump.
What determines the outcome for Democrats is the same it's ever been; turn out. It's why Biden won in 2020, it's why the GOP is constantly trying to sabotage and suppress voter registration. And it's why it's critical that Biden steps down, he simply cannot drive the needed turn out now and is unwilling to form a coalition with non-conservative democrats/independents.
That's not how old age works. Biden is not getting better, that's the whole point. This wasn't a political gaffe, it was a consequence of the inevitable collapse of age. Biden needs to step down, literally the only way Dems have a chance to win at this point.
The decades of propaganda about veganism by the meat and dairy industry is deeply embedded in cultures at this point, conservative culture especially.
People have been trained so thoroughly that they literally have a visceral, irrational response to the word veganism. It's been made impossible to actually talk about in a coherent way with most people, and lemmy has a lot of redditor refugees who carry that kind of thing with them.
It doesn't have to do with just the US, it's a very similar pattern wherever fascism rises. People's dissatisfaction with their corrupt and inept government is leveraged by fascist groups. It's what happened in Germany in the 20th century, in China, in Hungary etc.
What are you confused about exactly? Fascism always start on the fringe and it works its way into society because the "moderates" become complacent, fat, and greedy. In the US bribery is legal, and Democrats have become more concerned with protecting their corporate bribe scheme than protecting our democracy and stamping down fascism.
That's how it works every time -- corruption renders institutions unable to combat fascism, which is why when the take over actually happens it doesn't take a ton of force to push things over, they just push the door open and walk in.
There was some misogyny involved in Clinton's loss, but she had a special kind of misogyny attached to her that was built up over years. The fallout from the affair Bill had really kind of splashed back on Clinton, she wasn't just hated by misogynist men, she illicited a ton of internalized misogyny from conservative women as well, in part because of the way she presented herself after it came to light.
Harris doesn't have any of that baggage. At this point I think Trump has hoovered up the vast majority of misogynists and bigots already. Most people at this point likely don't care.
Polls have her doing better than Biden. You could do worse than running a woman when abortion is on the ballot (and by worse I mean, for example, a catholic who's visibly queasy about actually supporting bodily autonomy). She also gets you back the anti-genocide vote, and she's responsible for a lot of Biden's support among black Americans.
To quote Malcolm Tucker: "As useless as a marzipan dildo."
