Considering the responses to the thread, I don’t think that’s true.
Given that you aren't in any of the groups, nor following their mastodon account. I don't think what you think based on the responses on a sole thread has any merit
A lot of people, myself included, are still getting used to Lemmy. The status quo has been if stuff was happening to Reddit there was an easily accessible server status page you could search up. I tried to do the same this time around and Google came up with diddly-squat. I don’t think googling Beehaw to figure out what’s going on is that illogical of a response.
Every time you open Beehaw (or any Lemmy instance for the matter) on the right side you'll find the description of the server below the "trending communities" box. There the admins put important links, including the three alternative ways to reach them (Mastodon, Matrix and Discord). You didn't have to google anything, it was just taking a look the main page of the server, see the section titled "Beehaw" and read it (Something that could have been done any time the server was up)
You could have checked it before and follow their Mastodon-style account and join their matrix and/or discord groups, like most of us did.
Because everything they do server-wise is announced in those places, preemptive shutdowns included.
Alternative ways to reach the admin team and to be kept aware of anything happening with the server exist. If you didn't take the time (seconds) to join at least one of them, that's not the server's owners fault.
Sexual attraction means you look at someone and think "I'd fvck them"
Romantic attraction means you look at someone's personality and behaviour and think "I wanna date them" or "I wanna be in a romantic relationship with them"
There are limits to defederation at a user level. Hard defederation can only be done at a server level.
And server owners have the responsibility to keep their place safe from bad actors
How do they do that? By defederating servers that contain and promote that type of people and content.
A place like Beehaw that calls itself a safe space for marginalised groups cannot federate with anything owned by Meta, which openly allows racist, ableist and anti queer rhetoric on their platforms.
They already block a long list of alt-right servers, why would threads (that has already whitelisted alt-right propaganda groups like libsoftiktok) be any different?
When I choose this server I did because I knew they would defederate from any server promoting alt-right/"free speech" rhetoric
Defederation is not toxic, it's an essential tool. The ability to choose what kind of contents and account you can see is one of the best part of decentralised social networks.
All this elitism and drama over the vegan and vegetarian community reminded me why I hate vegans (yes, I'm a vegan who hates vegans. We exist)
I will never understand vegan elitism. The goal should be reducing harm as much as we can. Elitism does nothing to promote veganism as a philosophy and there will always be someone more strict and more ridiculous than you.
There are people who say eating mushrooms isn't vegan because fungi share similarities with animals. I kid you not.
Can I suggest naming the community simply plant-based?
That ways it not only includes the philosophies of veganism and vegetarianism, but also people that for religious reasons or health problems have to follow a dietary regime based solely or mostly on grains, plants, etc.
Do you really think Meta wants to be "one of us", that they plan to be on equal ground as the rest of the already existing instances managed by individuals and not by corporations? Are you that naive?
In my experience, it helps people new to the fediverse (specially if they want to start their own server) to know who to block/limit. People who actually want to be in those kind of massively defederated instance know how to join them and even have their own list of instances to join, without looking at the list from a small queer instance or even sites like JoinFediverse and the like.
Do you want to be like them or be with them?
