  • I feel like this section is rather disingenuous for the article author to just drop without mentioning that this is how all machine learning models are trained. The idea is that now (and for the next year or whatever) it's trained manually until the system is good enough to do it on its own with a good enough accuracy rating to not lose money.

Now, since Amazon is shuttering this, it's totally possible that they determined they'd need too many years of training data to break even, but at the very least this is standard industry practice for any machine learning model.

  • This is working less and less in my experience. Most people are serving ads through the same domain they server content from so the Pihole can't figure out what's an ad and what's content so it lets it all through

Still works for certain apps/websites, though

  • I agree that it's not a good thing, but the US gov isn't going to use the data to blackmail a closeted gay senator/govt official against their own government, while China will absolutely do that.

    Source: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-china-grindr-exclusive/exclusive-behind-grindrs-doomed-hookup-in-china-a-data-misstep-and-scramble-to-make-up-idUSKCN1SS10H/

And considering how good TikTok's content algorithm is at picking up on subtle ques in browsing habits, I'm sure they know (or at least can venture a good guess at) a lot more than just the information users typed into the app, like in the case of Grindr.

I'm not saying data grabbing for the sake of data grabbing like is happening now is a good thing, but at least it's controllable within the US for US companies holding data on US citizens. Lesser of 2 emails, I guess?

  • The ban is about national security and the fact that the TikTok app has been caught snooping on everything it can get its hands on and sends it directly back to Chinese servers.

I haven't read anything that says this, but I suppose it's possible that Meta/Google/Etc. have lobbied to play up that angle, but I would argue that's the capitalism we live in: the biggest pockets win.

  • All time favorite: Jungle Bird. The perfect mix of tiki drink in spirit but with a punch and grown up flavors!

Also love me a Bee's Knees with some high quality gin and honey. There's a fantastic New England distillery called Barr Hill that makes gin from honey, which makes for an extra amazing one.

I've really been enjoying the "Sour" format lately, too. Very versatile with all the random liquors or lower-proof alcohols I've collected over the past few years making random drinks.

  • I was talking to some friends once on a Sunday and they were being a bit quiet so I asked what was up and they said they had the "Sunday Scaries." I had to inquire what the sunday scaries were and bashfully noted that I've never felt that before. Made me realize how much I love doing what I do!
