  • Yes, I wouldn't describe my as very big but I'm not small and the number of people who look like they're going to say something and then reconsider it when they take a second look at me… cowards. These are people used to bullying those they can bully without consequence.

  • Even if we pedantically accept that 'almost double' is really 'just a few percent higher' while we're looking at a single digit likelihood, 'just a few percent more' than for the flu is a lot more people in overall numbers with something that spreads far quicker than the flu. We could get the death rate of Covid down to ½ the rate for the flu but if infections are more than double (this is just an example, I don't know the actual stats on this one), it still means Covid would be more deadly. Unless I'm missing something obvious.

  • I'm struggling to understand how glasses work wear a mask wouldn't. I'm not saying glasses won't help prevent people spitting Covid into your eyes. But how can you believe that and think wearing a mask won't help at all?

  • The number of big babies who huffed and puffed at being asked to not stand on other people's feet. Unreal. As if keeping 6ft distance from complete strangers in the supermarket is a major request. Like, why do you need my body heat we don't even know each other.

  • In many places schools weren't even really 'closed'. The number of failures stacked on top of failures is staggering. Nobody who matters will be held to account. Most westerners won't want to accept it but China's response was near flawless in comparison. And their economy continued to grow throughout. Albeit at a lesser rate. The west plunged itself into recession which it then reframed it's way out of and still hasn't recovered properly.

  • No excuse but the entitlement of being adult toddlers. Or actual toddlers but they tend to be a bit more sensible. (Unfortunately, I'm partial to acting like a toddler now and again myself, so this comment is a little self deprecating – turns out it's really hard to try to solvee social problems as an individual when the rest of society lives like fuck-you-i-don't-care-if-i-cough-a-deadly-virus-into-your-face.)

  • I'm inconsistently bearded/shaved and I also don't care about wearing a mask. I can wear an N95 or equivalent all day doing manual labour. I get that some people have breathing difficulties, etc, but for those who don't… never really understood the objection. You forget it's on after five minutes.

I've not stopped masking since the start of Covid. I'll put one on before going into a shop and frequently only remember to take it off when I get home. Medical masks are even less of a bother.

I do hate the masks with elasticated ear loops, though. They hurt. I don't know whose bright idea that was but they need promoting to a position where they can't cause any more damage.

Yes, I get strange looks. But I can convey with my eyes that I think they're a Muppet for not wearing a mask, so I don't get many actual comments.

  • Mr Beso Inger at the research institute for peace and prosperity found that "if you define war as 'when one country kills over 100,000,000 of another country's people with stone axes' the US has never been at war and is statistically the most peaceful country ever to have existed." He added: "It really makes you think."

  • It's hard isn't it? I have similar instincts, although I can turn it off when I'm being trolled. Some people don't want to be reached. They aren't talking in good faith. They aren't interested in what you have to say. They know what they are and are happy about it.

You might get hurt if you try to fix everyone. It's okay not to fix them. It's okay not to dunk on them, either. It's okay to say your piece and leave them to think about it. They'll either grow and develop. Or they won't. Liberalism provides an answer to every rebuttal. It might be a shit answer, but it has one. Sometimes planting the seed of doubt is enough.

There's a YouTube series that you might find helpful for reframing the way that you see the people you interact with and how you engage with them: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJA_jUddXvY7v0VkYRbANnTnzkA_HMFtQ . This video in particular may be useful to know what you're up against: https://youtu.be/CaPgDQkmqqM . I hope this helps and I hope you don't get too exhausted.

  • Two questions:

    1. Does anyone else accidentally tap the up vote button when their screen jumps while typing on lemmygrad in a browser and lose everything they were typing? I'm wondering if I'm the clumsiest person here.
    2. I saw on Hexbear that some users from the 'general' instances are creating new accounts Hexbear (here too?) because they're upset with defederation, etc. One problem may be that if they signed up to an instance with a personal email address and then sign up here or on Hexbear with the same name, they may put themselves at risk of being doxed if they make the wrong enemy through e.g. their lemmygrad account. Is it worth featuring a post telling people to use a new, anonymous name on lemmygrad if they create an account to protect their identity? This won't stop wreckers ruining someone's reputation but it may offer some security.
