  • Marxists aren't, or shouldn't be, dogmatic. It's the method that they uphold. Plus, Marx didn't live to see the USSR, China, Cuba, etc, so it's not possible to know whether he would maintain that position (taking your claim at face value).

  • It doesn't help that drinking a little of that koolaid can make life a whole lot easier. (In the short term, anyway – to any liberals reading, you won't believe how cosy life will be during the socialist construction phase – free healthcare, guaranteed housing, meaningful work, free education, libraries, parks, you name it. There's no such thing as poor socialism and that wealth will be your duty to create and share.)

  • Also, YouTube ads are about the most random things. I don't think I've ever seen an ad on YouTube for anything that I would actually buy. I'm not even nearly immune to ads, either. Show me a product that solves a problem for me and I'll strongly consider it. Consciously and I'm sure subconsciously.

Google knows what I do for a living, where I live, and what I spend money on. Google also knows that I use YouTube primarily to watch videos in other languages. It's not a secret to them. Yet they insist on trying to sell me products or services that have zero relevance to anything that I do. In English.

It makes me wonder if they're even trying to profit through ads. I know the answer – no, not really – the advertiser is the customer, not me. It must be too complicated for them to realise that they could charge more for ads the more sales they led to.

  • That's a good read, thanks. It's scary (a) how scary Covid is and (b) how bad public science/mathematics/health education is to lead so many people to confidently misunderstand the very basics of infection, disease, and statistics.

  • I know what you're saying. But basic hygeine, etc, work against some illnesses while other health scares require different strategies (as well as good hygeine). I think we may be talking at cross purposes, working with very different models of the world and of what's possible.

  • You will forget again by tomorrow. It's a very human coping mechanism. Then some meany will remind us again. The only reason I'm not so surprised is because I wake up every day with a riddle of tattoos covering my body.

  • There's a lot of layers to this. Among them the problem that yanks and other westerners with an exceptionalist world outlook have been convinced that only the good guys win, and that to win means to be the good guy no matter how abhorrent they are. So to accept that Russia is winning or, at least, that Ukraine can't win, means accepting that Russia is in fact the good guy. Which is clearly nonsense, but then neither you nor I are making the claim.
