Does ssh works? If yes, you can use autossh to create persistent ssh tunnel to your VPS.

Eh, the core dev is a bonafide tankie though, which immediately apparent when you check his activities on Lemmy.ml and lemmygrad, but who cares. The software is open sourced, with plenty of contributions from people all over the world in the past few months. The moment the dev brought politics or other shenanigan into the software, it'll going to get forked immediately.

I just tried installing SmartTube on my Chromecast Ultra today and found out it can pair with YouTube revanced. This fixed my number one issue with revanced where the cast button is not working.

Wow it actually works with Chromecast Ultra. It works with my Linux desktop too, previously I use kdeconnect for that.

It's a piracy-related instance, right? Could be taken down by their host due to some complains. Lemmy.dbzer0.com had to migrate to another host a few days ago due to such complains.

That's where I disagree. YouTube got this big because it's been free for so long, it practically squeezed out all of its competitors. Now that it no longer have competitors, YouTube started charging subscription, even raising the price now.

Also, you can't exactly compare YouTube subscription with Spotify subscription, because Spotify got its content mostly by paying records companies. YouTube on the other hand got majority of its contents for free from their users, just like Reddit and Twitter. Even if you subscribe to YouTube premium, the majority of those video owners will never get any money from YouTube.

YouTube Music is more comparable to Spotify, but why bundle it with YouTube premium and raised the subscription price instead of offering it as a separate product and keep the base YouTube subscription cheap so it'll make more sense for most people.

I wonder if most of the complaints of ads on YouTube are coming from people who subscribe to something like Netflix, but spend just as much (or more) time streaming YouTube.

Actually I don't watch YouTube that much, probably just one video per week or even less. But everytime I tried to watch a video in YouTube app, I got bombarded with ads. So what should happen to people like me who don't watch YouTube that much but don't want to see ads? Clearly paying the full subscription price is not worth it in this case, especially when I already have a Spotify family subscription.

It's not that easy to migrate from Spotify premium to Youtube Music, especially with how Spotify somehow got more and more podcasts into exclusive contract. I also use spotify premium on various 3rd party clients as well, not sure if youtube music support that use case. But yeah, from pricing alone, youtube premium which includes youtube music sounds like a good deal if you're ok with switching away from spotify/apple music.

If you already have a paid spotify/apple music subscription, and already have a buttload of streaming apps subscription (netflix, apple tv, etc), suddenly the prospect of adding $13.99 youtube subscription into your list of monthly subscriptions seems a lot less appealing.

Red Hats / IBM did this to themselves when they decided to kill CentOS. There are rumors that said Red Hat/ IBM was pissed that Rocky won a NASA contract, so they decided to pull the rug, stop releasing RHEL source code to non paying customers, and add clauses to their ToS to terminate contract with customers that redistribute the source code.

But you know what, if Red Hat/ IBM didn't kill CentOS, Rocky wouldn't exist. That NASA contract would've gone to Red Hat. Oracle Linux wouldn't be as popular (because people would use CentOS), and SuSE wouldn't provide free support to Rocky and Alma. Red Hat would still be the open source darling of the linux community, and IBM would still made a buttload of money.

Instead, they got greedy and think that all those CentOS downloads equals to lost RHEL sales (classic piracy equals to lost sales fallacy) and decided to kill CentOS to increase short term profits, which sprung Rocky and Alma (which truly eating their lunch because they also offer enterprise support). Red Hat didn't learn it's lesson and double down, and now have burned all of it's remaining good reputation in the open source community.

Just be careful when using your own google account on Aurora Store. There are reports of people getting their account banned by google. Do not use an important google account there.

OpenNIC is free, but pretty much almost no one use them. But I think lemmings would love them because of their open and democratic nature.

If you don't want to pay, there are other alternative domain name system, like OpenNIC. The problem is, most operating system don't recognize them so you'll have to go out of your way to install them into your machine, which significantly limit their adoption.

The fact that a souped up autocomplete system can solve basic algebra is already impressive IMO. But somehow people think it works like SkyNet and keep asking it to solve their calculus homework.

They did blur the screenshots though, but yeah, pretty much flexing that they can browse anything without restriction in their office, lmao.

It's Indonesia btw. That reminds me, I do have a concern about Lemmy instances that use .id TLD (e.g. lemdro.id). It's Indonesian TLD, so it might subject to Indonesian law, so they'll might run into trouble if they federate with porns communities. Might be a similar situation where websites with .ly TLD got into trouble with Libyan government back then.

Back in the day, we tried to get Reddit unblocked in our country, which blocks porn websites. No amount of arguments can convince the government agency in charge of the block list that Reddit is not a porn site. They probably got tired of us pestering them and send back a whole bunch of screenshots of porns in Reddit to justify the block.

I guess Reddit is a porn site.
