  • Weird - I see a lot of comments about how this is some evolution in the war of bots vs CAPTCHA, but I have come across this once, and it was many years ago. I just assumed it was a weird small captcha company that was doing their own thing

  • It took me until this deep in the thread to realize compersion wasn't a typo lol. Thanks for introducing me to a new term

  • I am a fluent English speaker (in the US for a few decades) who knows Spanish (native speaker of Portuguese which also uses vamos), and thinks about etymology all the time - it never occurred to me lol. I just thought it was some weird old timey american thing lol

  • Meanwhile in new Orleans, guy on kayak during flood finishes his beer before entering the neighborhood bar

  • Posted from Boost!

  • What's that filament?

  • It appears many languages have an equivalent to this, and many like English, point to Greek with "It's Greek to me" - and the Greek say "it's Chinese to me" and apparently the Chinese say "it's heavenly script". Here's an interesting chart showing where many languages point for something incomprehensible. Source

  • Oh right, I hadn't thought about it!

  • Haha I was too slow for that one

  • Isso, e era competição entre meus irmãos pra exagerar ao máximo : tipo, enquanto você estava a caminho da loja pra comprar o trigo, eu já comi o pão, caguei, fiz composto com a merda e plantei mais trigo, etc, etc

  • I also heard a more crass one: dropping the kids off at the pool

  • Paleontologist working on pterodactyls? 😂

  • Alternative for "vai ver se estou na esquina" is "vai catar coquinho" (go gather little coconuts), I guess because it's a silly, futile task?

  • I always said it as while you're bringing the wheat I already ate the bread. But in my family we exaggerated it for effect: while you're buying the wheat seed, I already shat the bread 😂

  • Wash your hands of [something] is also in American English, although I think more typically used when you were already involved in something then removed yourself from the situation

  • I am a historian, who even in this scenario would be one of the least useful... But I work on history of aviation, so maybe that could work out somehow lol

  • Looks great! Saved it to my gardening collection for when I finally have time for hobbies again (work sucking the life out of me right now)

  • I just made this exact comment on another thread: My first smartphone was a Samsung, it was also my last Samsung device. I hate the bloatware, just want as close to stock android as possible. After the Samsung I had a couple of Nexus device by Motorola (pre-pixel I guess? Google designed built by Motorola IIRC) then went to OnePlus

  • I am on Lemmy for the first time today because of it!

  • I got my first one as a gift too. I am now on my 3rd one and haven't paid for any, since I just complained when the hardware got bad and they just replaced it, even though I hadn't bought it haha
