  • I might agree with you if the boards themselves were disposable. If a high end macbook were $300 then sure, just get a new one. But they're $2000 or more just for an "ok" model. At that price they should be repairable.

I think people's anger stems from the fact that it wouldn't be hard for laptops to be repairable and in fact Apple's putting in additional roadblocks over time to make repairing harder. At the very least, having broken components be removable would do a lot for hardware lifespan.

  • I doubt the difference in performance is that significant. If it was 50% faster then sure. But odds are it's something like 3% speed difference. Same for the storage, I doubt that apple's proprietary interface is that much faster than a regular high quality nvme, definitely not enough to justify the multiple that they're charging for it compared to an off-the-shelf nvme.

  • Ok, but at this point you're not arguing they're wrong. Only that enforcement will be tricky.

Also, I can predict exactly how it's going to work, because I've been seeing the same trend. A new forced Windows update will just make it so that storage no longer connects because it's "unsafe".

  • I paid approx $700 for a i5 with a Geforce 3050 and a 144hz screen. The RAM was weak but it was upgrade able so I got it up to 40GB, about $800 all up. It's an MSI.

The only downside is that it's such a pain to take apart and it's put together in a way where there's a very real chance of doing permanent damage when taking off the cover, since the case actually wraps around the ports and makes the motherboard bend when you apply any pressure to it. It came with 8GB of RAM out of the box, so basically unusable without the upgrade; still, I'm very happy with it atm.

  • I love the idea of Framework and I want to get one, but the price is multiple times of what I paid for my current machine... and this is better than the Framework in several ways. I'm hoping that a few of the Frameworks make it onto the second hand market and I'll buy one there. The idea of a laptop that's easy to replace and lasts forever is brilliant though, and I hope they take off.

  • Do we really want more of their cash grabs on Steam? Their old stuff was great, but now the ship has sailed and their newest stuff just isn't that good anymore. Especially after the latest Diablo 4 patch.

  • If you average out your knowledge in different fields of expertise you'll realize you're just as dumb as they are. This brings something that isn't peace of mind, but does look very much like it. Though if your biggest problem is "people not understanding you", I suggest working on your communication skills.

  • @MrSnowy

Instead of shutting them out of your life and trying to cancel them, try to educate. Show them why certain views are wrong and show them the outcomes of their beliefs. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Because for a lot of people "they don't care". They think that they're strong and you're weak and they can get away with what they want to do because you literally can't stop them. From their perspective, trying to "reason" with them just shows how weak and powerless you are. A lot of fascists think like this and it's why people trying to convince them never quite seem to make headway. Also, they know that weak people object to their views, but, again, they don't care.

  • Yes, that's generally how electronic record searches go. I don't get why "secret" is bolded, since any of us would be getting the exact same treatment if there was a warrant for our own accounts. This at least is equitable in that it's equally unfair under the laws that these very same people had no problem with when they were in power.

  • I'd get CPU-Z and run it on the laptop as it is now. It'll tell you what type of RAM your machine uses and what voltage it takes. I know with DDR3 there were multiple different voltages for laptop memory, but that may not apply to DDR4. Personally I'd get the largest possible stick I can, two 8G may be faster than one 16G, but if you buy one 16G you can get another 16G later to get to 32, instead of needing to buy two 16G when you want to upgrade.

  • I can't believe they won't just use Bitcoin. If the EU weighs in then Bitcoin would probably get much more stable through sheer inertia. "But then they won't be able to control it" I hear you say. Good, Bitcoin not being able to be diluted by any one government to try and tamper with the economy is one of its upsides. Slower economic growth is a perfectly fine tradeoff for not having 10% inflation year over year like we have the last few years and economists are basically the modern version of oracular priests reading the stars and just as reliable.

  • Not only that, but I don't think the Russians really understand western thinking at this point. Even if they get everyone to believe these allegations, so what? It doesn't change that Russia started the war, or the killing they've been doing in captured territory.

"The Ukranians said bad things about Russians". Of course they did, the Russians are literally trying to kill them.

  • I don't see how it affects the Steam Deck. It's entirely possible that the Steam Deck supports fTPM purely because it was part of the motherboard template Valve chose and it would have been more trouble to change it than to just leave it in.
