  • Honestly check the time on active/background. My power usage shows 6 minutes active and 24 minutes background right now and I know I have been using Firefox actively for more than 6 minutes.

That said, when I have had Firefox draining in the background it has usually been due to a website misbehaving. Reddit, for example, would drain a lot of power if I left a tab open. I imagine it has to do with trying to sync messages or something.

  • There's a paid service though.

Like I get the sentiment, and I use YouTube with uBlock Origin to avoid paying, but if you're not willing to pay and you're not willing to watch ads what are you proposing?

  • I don't particularly like it because they monetize features they did not develop. They charge extra for some UI customizations that are available for free in many other distros because they are part of GNOME/Xfce.

Other than their available visual customizations (giving you a Windows-like interface out of the box for example) it is simply the last Ubuntu LTS release. If you purchase the Pro version you need to re-purchase it for every version upgrade (so every two years).

I would say just go with Ubuntu if you're considering Zorin.

  • If you're new, Ubuntu (or one of its variants, like Xubuntu or Kubuntu) or Linux Mint are great "safe" options. The only thing to consider with Mint is that there is only an LTS release so you will end up with older versions of some programs. I've been using Linux as my primary OS for 17 years but I will still throw Xubuntu on a laptop if I just want to get something up and running quickly - other than having some extra packages installed out of the box there's nothing "wrong" with it.

That said I use openSUSE Tumbleweed as my daily driver. I like the rolling release and cutting edge packages, plus I like that YaST allows me to install the system exactly the way I want - picking and choosing individual packages.

  • For survival/crafting/whatever games - let me adjust drop rates and toggle things on and off individually, rather than just choosing a difficulty.

What I mean by this is looking at something like Ark versus Subnautica. Ark gives a super fine grained level of customization around spawn rates and other settings. You don't even need to strictly enable or disable hunger but can set the decay rate, for example.

  • Geforce Now is not at all about cost to me. I use GeForce Now because it allows me to play on my laptop, tablet, phone or TV anywhere I have an internet connection. I don't have or want a desktop, and prefer to have a thin and light laptop for travel rather than a gaming laptop.

  • lxqt > Plasma > Deepin

    More serious answer, Trinity.

But you're also setting up a bit of a false scenario because there are far more gtk DEs than what you have listed. Mate, Cinnamon, Budgie...
