  • "Sorry, but democracy isn't profitable. Later, losers!"

Edit: Should've said it's not profitable enough. As the great Stephanie Sterling often says, corporations don't just want some of the money, they want all of the money.

  • So, let's just use an example of a pill that treats headaches so I can understand, because I'm kinda stupid.

It works super well, and most patients taking it in double blind trials find it relieves headache pain considerably. Why is it a bad thing, to the point of rejecting it as a treatment, that the patient feels that the pill is working very well and has concluded on their own that this is probably not a placebo?

I can understand a patient being misled by coincidence, but surely a measurable, verifiable, and repeatable benefit to the patient compared to pills without medicinal ingredients would warrant a different conclusion, wouldn't it?

In your coma scenario, I'm sure there is a statistical analysis that can be performed to show with a degree of certainty that a specific medication has a higher likelihood of being effective than a placebo in a controlled experiment.

I commented on this same story a while ago when it first broke that it was likely to be rejected and I don't think anyone explained it in the thread.

  • It's like you didn't even read what I said, or didn't understand. If it were only about vibes, the judges wouldn't need to be experts in that sport. But whatever, you obviously just want to be correct and won't look up shit.

I'm serious about the competitive accounting, or maybe poker championships; you clearly need something crunchy in order to have fun. Almost all sports have made rules and scoring adjustments over time to accommodate stylistic approaches to competition, Olympics or not, because they're cool and fun and people like them.

That doesn't mean it's simple pageantry. Not sure if you've ever known an athlete who was training for the Olympics (I have a cousin who was an Olympic hopeful in figure skating), but it takes a lot of work and knowing what judges look for is 100% part of it. Style is part of the scoring and that is good.

Imagine if every gymnast had the exact same routine on purpose for objective comparison. Wow, very cool and fun. So entertaining and worth watching. Gold medal for objective conformity.

  • Surely you can understand how taking a corner in a different way is an obvious indicator of style and how the criteria can allow for variation from the expected angle, velocity, etc. in order to highlight the skill required to drive in a specific fashion, even if that fashion is meant to highlight the flashiness of a particular move.

While I don't disagree with your assertion that it's possible to eliminate subjectivity, I really don't understand why you would want to, and it would ruin the sport. That is, I suppose, an unspoken part of my previous comment. It is factually part of the sport that stylistic driving tactics are more impressive on a technical and visual level, and that cannot possibly be made less subjective. It's part of the culture of the sport.

Each sport is different, I think that's cool. Making everything objectively about numbers so that each sport can be directly compared and athletes can be evaluated based entirely on algorithmic calculation based on statistics takes a lot of fun away and makes it lifeless. Maybe you could look into competitive accounting? That truly is a thing.

  • Honestly, I just kept some distros on a USB disk with Ventoy (amazing software for booting ISOs from USB) on it and booted them up repeatedly until I felt comfortable and found my favourite.

I really don't think waffling around on Windows trying open source alternatives is the answer. Look up what the alternatives are, then boot up a live image and download them. Try them. Then switch if you like it.

This is coming from someone who used Windows from 1999 until 2023 and planned a transition to Linux over time (about a month) using a spreadsheet. It really doesn't have to be complicated or difficult; I'm not a programmer or anything, I'm just a former Windows power user.

  • Genuinely convinced this is an uninformed opinion, not an unpopular one. Go look up the criteria, watch some videos and commentary from people who are experts, and learn about each of the sports you're lazily criticizing.

Also, as another commenter said, the Olympics are absolutely also about art and style - the ancient Greeks were a civilization captivated by aesthetics. If you don't like it, no one is forcing you to watch.

  • Yeah, that's fair, I just think humans are an embarrassment overall. We think of ourselves as superior, but here we are subjugating our fellow humans out of a disinterest in real solutions.

There's nothing setting us apart from animals in that sense, we just have the ability to rationalize and justify the horrible things we do.

Trump probably thinks he has to act that way because he believes ruling with an iron fist is key to success from watching his dad do it and prosper, not understanding that his dad had better business sense than he does.

  • I simply don't agree. He would treat his family the exact same way, so he is just reaping what he has sown for the last 60 years. Look at how Trump's gone through life - it's normal for him to treat everyone as disposable.

If you're not trying to be a good person by 70, it won't be happening. This is the closest to karma that we will probably ever see a rich person get, so I'm inclined to enjoy it. If it disgusts you, fine, but I want to see him crash and burn because it's long overdue.

  • As a person with (yes, diagnosed) ADHD, this is pretty harmful. Idk how you're gonna go get tested if you don't at least think it's something that might apply to you.

No one ever thought I had ADHD except my ADHD wife, but the shame of thinking you're just useless and lazy is incredibly damaging. Even with a diagnosis I can't afford medication, so my quality of life hasn't improved at all because I can't access treatment. My parents said they would "never have thought" I had ADHD despite my assessor saying I fit the symptoms basically to a T.

Most clinicians won't suggest ADHD as a diagnosis because the patient might not even realize that they have executive dysfunction or problems noticing things. They might have come in for depression and anxiety, not knowing that those are side effects of not being able to manage their ADHD. This is why specialists are necessary, not because ADHD is uncommon.

Edit: Also this opinion is extremely popular, btw. It's kind of the dominant view everywhere except in very online spaces, where people with ADHD tend to congregate for support and community.

  • My wife's dad makes this garlic chili oil where he tosses a bunch of red Asian chili peppers (that he grows himself each summer) and a ton of minced garlic and blends it with a neutral oil.

I normally mix it with some mayo to give it a thicker texture so it's more dippable but it's good by itself too. It goes great with essentially everything, but my favourites to use it with are eggs, pizza, and meats.

  • Hmm, you know, I think I liked Workman the most. Colemak has been the most difficult to adapt to, but I'm not sure if it's because I had been away from QWERTY for so long (Colemak has a lot of keys in common with QWERTY) or because the layout has keys in locations that I don't find the most intuitive.

Honestly, if I'm still hovering around 80 WPM for much longer it might actually be a good move to switch back to Workman, lol. Dvorak was probably the best IMO for reducing finger and wrist movement and strain if that's a concern for you.

  • I've tried Dvorak and Workman but switched to Colemak-DH about a year ago just for fun and to try something new (I have a split ortho keyboard with XDA keycaps so the profile is uniform).

Works great, but my typing speed dropped by about 40 WPM from the low 110s to the mid-70s and I haven't had enough time to practice and get back up there. Previous layouts have required at least a few months of practice with Monkeytype or Keybr and I've been too busy.
