FYI there are some sites that index and archive some of the bigger lemmy instances fyi. I don’t know if this is the case for your instance but if you posted to say, lemmy.world there is a chance your post/comment is archived on a 3rd party site that you have 0 control over
Same issue reddit had, except not nearly as bad as reddit was very thoroughly archived prior to the api changes
Henry Kissinger died.
Well even within nepotism and privilege there are people who reject it but there are far more who do not, it seems
That’s where we start to get to the nature vs nurture debate I suppose.
Henry Kissinger died.
People respond to power differently. I’m sure you’ve held it at some point. Sure, you’ve never been a captain of industry (I assume) but you’ve probably been asked to watch a child for at least a few moments, or had a pet, or a friendship/romantic relationship where there was an imbalance, if only temporarily
Some people reject that feeling of power for various reasons (avoiding responsibility, the potential to cause harm, etc), some people just are kind of eh about it and see it for what it is (“I will take care of this baby because that is what you are supposed to do”, “I will be a trustworthy partner because that is what is right”, etc), some people realize power is exploitable and gives them potential advantage (I can shape this babies worldview, I can make my friend/partner dependent)
That last category is the type to try and seize more and more power, imo. They will potentially delude themselves with niceties along the way (“I made the baby laugh”, “I did a nice thing for my friend/partner today”, “I have created 800,000 jobs”) but this is always overlooking evil (“my goal is to shape this baby into my worldview rather than allow it to develop its own personality”, “my goal is to manipulate my friend/partner into staying loyal regardless of my behavior”, “the vast majority of the 800,000 jobs I’ve made are exploitative and the empire I’ve built is destructive in many other ways like destroying small businesses that helped create reasonable wealth within communities”)
Henry Kissinger died.
They’re not saving, that’s a faulty belief. The majority of them aren’t even liquid
They’re hoarding as frequently mentioned but it’s not about resources, really, it’s about control and power. Power and valuation are linked somewhat, but it takes more than that
Say my company is amazon, as an example. I hoard ownership stake and equity. I do not give workers a share and pay them minimally. I give investors as little as possible and buy back shares whenever I can. I raise the valuation by increasing the worth of company initially through traditional performance means: sell more stuff, productivity, efficiency, etc. but eventually I get so big at this I have to look at how to diversify to increase power. I enter other markets. Now I’m not just a online retail store, I’m a logistics company, I’m a pharmacy, I’m a web host for 50+% of the internet, I’m a key player in media streaming, I’m a smart home device manufacturer, I’m an ebook manufacturer, etc. I have dominance across dozens of markets
By hoarding equity I maintain control of that company to a significant degree. At this point there is likely a board that can override me for the sake of the shareholders who have taken a large portion of my equity but there is no other single person that has my power.
The equity comes with massive resource benefits of course, it’s basically infinite money chest and even if I’m not liquid I can get a loan for infinity dollars at a moments notice because I’m obviously good for it. But the real motivation for hoarding is because if I stop? Even for a second? I lose this power
That’s why they never retire. They only step down and put some weenie ceo in their place who won’t get their full power until they’re decrepit or dead. How many people can name the ceo of amazon now? (It’s Andy jassy, has a 0.02% ownership stake in amazon) but everyone knows bezos (9.6% ownership stake in amazon, 1.023 billion shares). People only knew tim cook because jobs literally knew he was about to die and his ownership stake is minimal (0.021% vs jobs 0.2% at his death). Who can name the CEO of twitter (Linda yaccarino, no ownership)? Musk is still the ceo of tesla (70% stake in twitter, 12.8% tesla). Even with these minimal ownership stakes though these people are filthy rich - jassy and cook both have a net worth well over half a billion from that alone.

I misread the headline as “this section of jimmy carters Wikipedia article” and was so confused
More than that I remember when you could MOD your phone
You had some money burning a hole in your pocket and/or were good at tinkering? You could change the casing of your phone, add gaudy flashing LEDs, etc
Real nerds like me would wire LEDs into circuits on the phone so that when it rang they triggered. Combine that with some of the circuits from the “baby’s first circuits” book and then you have a ring of LEDs around the screen that chase each other like the knight rider car when it rings. You can see them because OF COURSE you swapped the case with translucent plastic like a 1998 N64 or gameboy color. The resale value is now $8
Some designer asshole was like “b-b-b-b-but that’s not good design!!! My training says so! Myspace.com, livejournal, and geocities are a travesty! Soft edges and muted colors everywhere! All logos have to be a stupid flat piece of shit! Webpages should take much longer to load even though computers are literally hundreds of thousands of times faster! Now everything is BLAND and it SUCKS. I hate the future
Sodomy/buggery is technically still illegal in Texas
It’s unenforceable because the Supreme Court overturned the states ability to enforce the law but they’ve still never removed the laws. The last attempt was in 2023 and failed. They have arguably fought to protect the laws on the books for a time like now, when they could challenge and overturn the 2003 decision made in Lawrence v Texas and suddenly reenact all of those laws at once without having to re establish a legal framework once a sympathetic supreme court opens the floodgates for homophobia
Of note that I forgot to mention: all original licenses were grandfathered in and retain perpetual updates for the life of unraid (for now, at least)
I knew a girl in high school who was pulling through a spot too fast and got into a head on collision. Now I’m so paranoid about pulling through
Depends greatly on the game
A great game I play for 80-120 hours, 100%, and enjoy? Sure, i guess, but it’s still unnecessary
A mediocre game that sucks shit and was overhyped? That sucks but fuck me for not having the time to sit on a billion game blogs I guess
I have posted about this before and will again though: they are fleecing you and you are drinking their poison.
Have budgets and inflation gone up? Yes
But has volume of game sales gone up tremendously as well? Also yes
GTA 3 sold 14.5 million copies at $60ish dollars GTA 5 sold a whopping 215 million copies at $60 dollars
Granted both weren’t flat $60, sales exist, the ps2 had the greatest hits edition at a lower cost, gta5 is regularly dropped to $20-30, etc.
But gta 3 earned somewhere around 500 million dollars on a development budget of roughly 5 million
GTA 5 revenue is harder to decipher because of the online component. However, it is estimated that it had cleared 800 million on its first fucking day, 1 billion in the first three days of sales (before online) and has cleared almost 10 billion in sales to date.
Development cost was much higher, 265 million
Now gta is a cherry picked example (though picked because it’s one of the most likely games to be released at 80-100 despite having no right to be doing so other than rockstar/take2 fucking over their fans)
But this dynamic isn’t limited to them:
Mario kart snes: 9 million copies sold Mario kart 8 switch: 68.2 million copies sold
Animal crossing GameCube: 2.71 million sold Animal crossing new horizon: 47.8 million copies sold
God of war ps2: 4.61 million God of war 2018: 23 million
Sometimes it’s misleading though: Doom 1993 (pc): 1.1 million copies sold, 3.5 if you count ultimate doom and doom 2, earning about 9 million dollars (20 million 2025 dollars). Doom eternal: 3 million copies sold but 450 million in revenue thanks to services like gamepass, widely considered a financial success
All of these games earned back their budgets. Some way more than others. Nintendo especially has a tendency to keep development budgets very lean (relative to western studios, at least). Where Nintendo might spend 20-30 million on a game Sony or rockstar might spend 200-300 million. And yet they still earn back their budget and make a profit.
80-100 game is just greed. The exception of course is for small independent studios who will never reach anywhere near this sales volume. Of course the way the system works they can’t charge this because it’s not about paying what someone needs to survive, it’s about paying what we deem someone is worth based on prestige.
TLDR: If 300 million people buy GTA 6 for $40 rockstar will make 12 billion dollars and it’s entirely reasonable to assume they may sell that many copies within the first 2-3 months based on historical data. They will also have an online component to fleece people even more. The need to charge 80-100 is bullshit
Even if you don’t pay for updates you can still run the software perpetually, you just don’t get updates
Oh it’s not worth it to switch, unraid licenses are forever (unless they really fuck people over) and changing at this point would mean destroying your data
Unraid is fine and if you use it no judgement but truenas will cost you $0, is open source, and the kubernetes or docker implementation (depending on core vs scale) is fairly similar with community apps as well plus vms and such if you go with scale. Unraid is simpler because you don’t need to fuck with zfs by default but now that zfs expansion is a thing it’s really a no brainer to go with zfs for the majority of self hosting scenarios imo
or go with proxmox, or just Debian or whatever but those have a much higher learning curve
Use tunemymusic to export playlist and import into deezer/tidal or use songdata.io to convert spotify urls to deezer/tidal urls then use streamrip
https://github.com/nathom/streamrip
Supports qobuz, tidal, deezer, soundcloud
More labor intensive but you’ll get higher quality files this way (can get 16 bit 44.1khz or even 96khz 24bit if you have premium tidal and it’s available for the song although that’s generally way overkill)
There’s probably ways to rip directly from spotify but in my experience a lot of apps that claim they can rip at the highest quality of the network don’t actually do it. They’ll export a 320mp3 or flac or whatever but they really transcode a lower bitrate file. If that doesn’t matter to you then stuff like notecable works (never tested for spotify but for apple music it def transcodes lossless).
Depends on what your use is for. If it’s strictly personal and you don’t care about lossless audio then whatever. If you plan to upload to red or something and it’s a notable album someone will probably recognize it’s a transcode at some point. Whatever method you use there’s a thread there where you can post spectrals to check before you upload and it can save you grief.
That said I would like to know a way to get top quality from spotify. There is a single album that is only on spotify and no other streaming platforms and as far as I can tell no one has ripped it. If you or I figure it out you should rip https://open.spotify.com/album/1kQYg5es8a8Q1tfTgiH3TV . Great album and I don’t have premium. I have some of the singles on vinyl
The inherent issue is that they do not decouple security updates and bug fixes from feature updates
I paid $450 for professional software suite x 2012. I expect it to work for quite some time based on that extreme price. 2 patches come out during the year 2012 that fix some bugs, but not all.
Software suite x 2013 comes out. A cool new feature is added, maybe 2 or 3. It’s also the most stable version yet! Fixing even more bugs. (More bugs are introduced with the new features but whatever). $500 or $129 upgrade
I don’t want the new features. I just want the bug fixes. I don’t have that option.
Unraid is one of the few pieces of software I’ve seen with this option. They initially did a perpetual license for years, several levels up to $129. They found that didn’t cover costs. Now they have a model where you purchase a license and keep that but updates are subscription based. Your license lasts one year but you can run the software in perpetuity. You can download updates for that year and you can extend the license for $36 to download updates for an additional year.
In addition to that critical security updates are free to download even if your license is expired and are produced until your version hits end of life, which is when 2 major revisions come after (e.g. they’re on 7.1.0 now, that will be EOL as of version 7.3.0). If you truly want updates in perpetuity they still offer that as well, it just costs almost 2x as much now ($249).
That said if you want a NAS go with free software. I won’t judge you if you use unraid, it’s easy to use, but there are non proprietary and FOSS options where licensing isn’t an issue at all for home use (or at all)
“Firefox is the only major browser not backed by a billionaire”
This is a misleading statement. 86% of Mozilla’s funding is from google. Modern web browsers are a fucked landscape designed to perpetuate googles dominance
it’s super fun to talk to a “fiscal conservative” or “neoliberal” that’s real pissed off about the people scalping ps5s or concert tickets or whatever
“They buy up all the supply with unfair advantages like bots and using discord channels to get restock alerts before anyone else can know! Then they drive up the price so high no one can afford it!”
You can get them so close to having the epiphany that you just had but their dream of being a billionaire themselves one day causes so much cognitive dissonance that they will then defend elon musk. Or the neolib will defend all the poor very wealthy CEOs and executives worth 10+ million dollars while secretly wanting to defend billionaires like bill gates because he has better optics, but they realize billionaires in general have bad optics at the moment right now so they shut up
Ultra wealthy people in general are the issue. Billionaires are the absolute worst of it but the single person with an 80 million dollar estate is the same problem just on a smaller scale. That still chokes a fairly large community of resources. Billionaires just do the same thing to an entire nation, or even the world to some degree.
All of that money is equity. Basically none of these dudes are liquid and the bits they have that are liquid are from cashing out stolen equity. It’s because we have this fucked up idea that because I start a company I then hold the bag in perpetuity and you get nothing because I say so. Even if I bring you on in the beginning and you help me build it up from nothing, even if you help me run it as it grows to an empire, even if you help keep the empire running each and every day. I pay you money, as little as possible, and ideally no benefits, and you get absolutely no share of the company that you are helping to build.
So here I sit in my ivory tower, a company valued at 1 million, 5 million, 100 billion, 3 trillion. Who do I share that equity with? People who will loan me money. No one who will actually do any real work to make the company move forward day to day. Those people sweating and bleeding get nothing. The people getting a chunk of the pie are the ones that can afford to buy in and they reap the rewards as a result: they don’t trade their physical health for money, they don’t get paid shit, and as the company grows they make more and more while they sit on their asses like the parasites they are, sucking away your wages and benefits. Your health insurance is worse this year? Or it doesn’t exist at all? Gotta cut costs to please the shareholders and investors to turn a “profit”
That’s why in terms of stock ownership the top 10% of Americans own 87% of American owned stocks and the bottom 90% own 13%. The bottom 50% own 1% and the top 1% own 50%. This excludes the portion of the market owned by foreign investors but that’s still tremendous - the top 1% own 23 trillion dollars worth of equity.
Forcibly take over amazon, Walmart, Google, apple, etc and nationalize them. Give the equity owned by retail investors to the workers. And not just the fancy coders and engineers that probably already had stock options, to the people hocking phones at mall kiosks and doing tech support. Then jail all billionaires for life for crimes against humanity and outlaw advertising and we might save humanity
Rebecca ass is shockingly tame for old James Bond
Pussy Galore is unironically a character name in Goldfinger (1964)
I was born blind in one eye and I’ve never seen a magic eye picture
When I was a kid I was convinced I could get it to work but I never did. I was never going to, I don’t have binocular vision, but I tried
I really sympathized with that one guy in mallrats
