There was a short time around 1977, during which my wildest fantasy of the best and happiest thing that could possibly happen to me (short of truly fantastical and nigh-impossible things like going to Disneyland, which I wasn't yet sure really existed) would have been to receive multiple packs of Fruit Stripe gum.
I'm only guessing, but school these days is where you learn that your economic dreams are dead on arrival and that your generation won't be able to stop any of the currently unfolding disasters for the human race. Or at best that you'll get a nice degree but it won't pay for itself even if you can find anywhere you can stand to work and afford to live.
Agreed, but that might be missing the significance of the moment somewhat. It apparently only takes Bannon and a small handful of other unreasonably influential voices on the right to send Congress even further into chaos and dysfunction, making the passing of one current bill a comparatively tiny relief.
The part that I sometimes find the most disturbing is that they seem to think that's exactly how it is for everyone else.
And worse yet, in many ways the general welfare and common good are not irrelevant to them but something they are committed to actively opposing. General welfare and common good tend toward increasing the numbers of sane, secure, less-traumatized, reasonably-educated people who vote for more of the same in a positive feedback loop. And that is hell for anyone who's committed to a race to the bottom in what they perceive as a fundamentally dog-eat-dog world where we are no more than semi-literate primates.
Sure, the train track ends shortly at a cliff, but why aren't Americans enthusiastic about how the train is currently moving swiftly over a good solid trestle?
Agreeing with two other sub-comments before mine, I also want to add that to some degree it's similar to the awful reason why the U.S. runs its schools with localized school districts. So that residents of more affluent areas receive more extensive services.
Taken entirely generally, your points are uncontroversial and common knowledge. But if you're suggesting Hillary Clinton does not genuinely admire and feel personal friendship for Henry Kissinger, I believe you are mistaken.
I also did not say, nor did I intend to imply, that she "supports everything he ever did". In replying to your earlier comment which contained that phrase, I was by no means intending to claim that HRC was a completely uncritical supporter of literally every action of HK.
