  • "The loss of direct and indirect jobs would be catastrophic," said Thrasher, who confirmed sending the letter and said he has not received a response. The letter from Pennsylvania-based coal marketer Xcoal and comments from agriculture representatives showing tangible impacts from the proposed fees have not previously been reported. Coal mines in West Virginia are also preparing to lay off miners as unsold coal inventories pile up, Chris Hamilton, CEO of the West Virginia Coal Association, told Reuters.

hey, WV... is trump hurting the right people yet?

  • let it play out. so far the judiciary has been the only administrative bulwark. we will know so much more very shortly and that will dictate what hand is forced next.

edit: not defending the democrats one bit, but they may be looking for judicially adjudicated constitutional overreach by the executive. when that happens, if the dems dont react with leadership and direction, the only thing left is mass street action (bets on this actually getting organized?) and then there will almost certainly be real violence - which may open up the fourth box.

  • thats the point - make things so mind-fuckingly insane that we just throw up our hands and walk away. look at the selection of people for directorships... each one is more fucking mental than the last. pure, unadulterated gaslighting.

  • well considered reply. thanks. I am currently trapped in the dystopian hell that is the USA, but I hope my canadian peeps find a way out of the trap that ensnared people here.

as a non-canadian (with family in canada) I can only offer my sincere best wishes and support as the current us administration continues its criminal belligerence towards you. whatever you choose, do it carefully with full knowledge that what your country looks like on the other side of the decision matters greatly to you and the world.

  • Like just have our ISPs serve up DNS redirects to government-hosted pages proclaiming the site is blocked and detailing why, with links to things like private, non-partisan analysis as supporting evidence.

and you will have created a new machine for the carnival barkers to point at and say "see how much they want to hide the truth from you!"

I dont have a solution, but fail to see how this may be one. censorship is almost always a tool that will eventually remove the hand of the wielder.

  • Toward the end of his speech, Trump quoted an unlikely source.

“Etched onto the walls of this building are the words English philosopher John Locke said: ‘Where law ends, tyranny begins,’” Trump said. “And I see that.”

    ominous prediction.

  • that shtick went out the window, for me, during the bush the lesser reign when they pushed "freedom fries". fascist language control right there.

I can point to that and say the republican (specifically) and american (generally) freight train was already clearly off the tracks.

    edit: missed word.

  • that would be trump

  • reasonable critique. I would, however, say that his messages were entirely obfuscated, e.g. when placed into firm context by project 2025 he did the whole "I barely know him" BS - but, like any snake oil salesman, encouraged people to assume what they wanted to assume.

without going into the terrible history of politics, hegemony and empire in the us, harris and walz were pretty run of the mill centrist players - i.e. more of the same.

trump captured the undereducated/underinformed/otherist/accelerationist/populist rage and deftly parried those voters (and the the rest of us) into the gaping wolf maw.

I am decidedly not a conservative and thanks for the expanded explanation. much appreciated.
