  • In my household, where we pirate very very rarely if ever (the last time I’m aware of was 2010, though I’m not the software engineer in the relationship), we plan to: a) cycle between apps as needed; and b) frankly, watch less tv. We’re watching a couple of things on Netflix right now but once we’re done, that’s the next to go, much to my kids’ dismay. They’ll get over it.

  • I thought the “on this day” comment was specifically talking about the Empire being defeated on Lothall, not specifically the whole galaxy? Anyway that’s how I took it when I watched it, but I could be misremembering something key.

  • Totally anecdotal but we chose a Bosch about 9 years ago because, in theory, they were good dishwashers and we’ve never had an issue with it in those 9 years. It’s relatively quiet (I think they make them even quieter now), fit and finish so to speak is good, love the shallow top (3rd) rack. I don’t 100% love the rack set up, like where the tines(?) are, but it’s manageable. I compare it to my parents’ dishwasher and the tines on the bottom rack are so spread out that they can’t pack as many plates in. Oh another huge plus in our case is that I’ve never had a piece of plastic melt on the bottom rack. I can put anything down there, even the stuff that says top rack only.

  • I loved my candy bar phone. My purse got stolen and I was most upset about losing that phone. I had programmed custom ringtones into it. I still feel fonder of that phone than I do about my iPhone, I think because the iPhones are pretty soulless and that little teal phone had plenty of character.

  • Arts admin. But I live and grew up in Silicon Valley; my dad worked in tech although he wasn’t an engineer, so we always had fairly up-to-date tech and I’m pretty comfortable with it. But when my husband (software engineer) and I watch Linus Tech Tips, most of it goes over my head. I adopted Lemmy during the Reddit blackout before he did (and funny enough, I also switched to Reddit during the Digg fiasco before he did, too).

  • Man I feel for both of you in this situation. Obviously he could have made a decision at some point in his life to stop being shitty, and he didn’t, so that’s on him and I don’t blame you one bit for not having a relationship with him (or much of one). But I can also imagine a kid with really shitty parents who gets “rewarded” for essentially alienating their older sibling in this manner, so he does that in the hopes that it will strengthen an otherwise toxic bond with the parents. Which of course it really doesn’t, but no kid is going to understand that. Any kid wants good parents who love them. Oh man, I’m so sorry, for both of you but mostly for you.

  • Part of the reason it’s demoralizing is that most of the time the poor support people don’t actually have the power to fix the problem that the person on the other end of the line is having. In many cases they’re punished for letting someone cancel service which is why you keep getting passed around until someone takes pity on you and accepts the hit to their metrics. I know sometimes people suck but I think we mostly suck when the systems we operate in make it impossible to lean into our humanity.

  • Yeah, more comfortable for sure. I have one that I use when I’m doing something more active, or will be walking more. A regular purse on one shoulder sucks after a surprisingly short amount of time.
