  • I was really enjoying the video until he used the word "ricing". While the creator may not know, that word is fairly racist.

  • I already thought this list was doing a lot of lifting for capitalism but wow:

    1. Free healthcare, as most critics of UnitedHealthcare think should replace privatized healthcare, has as many if not more problems as privatized healthcare, evidenced by Canada preventing disabled families from immigrating there so their system can ignore [sic]

It genuinely had me cackling seeing this misinformation included. Firstly, Canada is, by and large, pretty poor at free healthcare. The UK is also a mess. But even then it's not true, here's a source for that: https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/issue-briefs/2023/jan/us-health-care-global-perspective-2022

Surely there's a better source than thetoptens.com for this perspective?

  • I personally am of the belief that some citizens of this country like it on the 26/01 precisely because it hurts some of our citizens.

The one person I saw in the Melbourne CBD yesterday wrapped in an Australian flag was also wearing a Donald Trump MAGA hat, for whatever that's worth.

  • Yes, there are likely to be many people that are offended by the date being changed. But personally I don't think we should base the future of our nation on the likes of Peter Dutton and his ilk.

  • No one is asking you to feel guilty. We're asking you to acknowledge the past, and to acknowledge the privilege that brings you. To use that to help forge a path of reconciliation forward together as a nation.

  • You're right, I messed that one up, but honestly who actually cares? I certainly don't.

Why not have a day that we can all celebrate.

  • I really think that your and @Tau@aussie.zone's have some really outdated beliefs here. At what point, after trying "respectably" to have their voices heard, are indigenous mob supposed to rise up?

As well, do you even know about your own history, and the history of this so-called country? Invasion Day celebrates the anniversary of Cook's invasion of these lands. That is why his statues have been targeted around this date, because that is what is being celebrated on this day.

As a trans woman, I am always going to stand in solidarity with other minority groups. Always was, always will be.

  • Many indigenous activists consider the national apology to be an entirely empty gesture.

  • Definitely not. Invasion day is tomorrow, and the term "the colony/commonwealth will fall" is used by first nations activists. Recall back to last year when the Captain Cook statue was toppled in St. Kilda.

  • Usually rubber from what I know.

  • I'm merely hoping that the collective intelligence of 8 billion aided by AI and whatnot...

Okay, two things. Firstly, AI is causing a massive acceleration in the damage we're doing to the climate. It is incredibly power-hungry to train those models. Secondly, AI is, in fact, incredibly bloody stupid. It is not "intelligent", and in essence is just a rebranding of what AI should be for marketing purposes. It's not capable of novel ideas, nor does it try to be.

Please for the love of all that is good in this world could people educate themselves on how terrible AI actually is.

  • WTF

  • Even assuming he is a Nazi

Dude's throwing the Roman salute, what more proof do you need? It's not like it's likely he's going to come out and say "I'm a Nazi" anytime soon.

  • I thought Ada added you as a mod to this comm well after it's creation?

  • For better or worse that still makes migration a much bigger pill to swallow though.

  • I thought part of the difference with piefed is that it's not a drop-in replacement that can hook into current databases, such that an instance would have to start afresh on a new subdomain, and users would have to sign-up again, re-subscribe to their communities, etc. Is that the case, or was I mistaken?

  • This is a poor take on how to deal with the tyranny of the majority, in my opinion. I wasn't saying it necessarily applied here, and was only bringing it up as a caution against absolute democracy. Here's a longer form example:

Say you have a software project that operates as an absolute democracy. Each and every new software feature that the developers work on is decided by a vote of all users and contributors to the project. For vote after vote, the feature "implement screen-reader support" is passed over for shinier and more exciting new features, after all the vast majority of voters don't use a screen-reader.

Wouldn't you say that it is fair if eventually the developers told the community "Nope, we're going to implement screen-reader support as the next feature"? Or do you believe the blind users should have to fork the project and implement screen-reader support for themselves? After all, they've been "free" to do that the whole time.

  • There are absolutely viable forks/rewrites of the Lemmy backend. Sublinks was the one I was keeping an eye on, but progress seems to have slowed down significantly on that. It's supposed to be a drop-in replacement for Lemmy that continues working with current apps.

  • ...impose rules that would never pass a basic yes/no poll...

I generally agree with your comment, but I wanted to point out that the tyranny of the majority can still be a major issue. For example, there are often times when a majority of people believe the opposite of what a small number of experts agree is the best course of action. You can see this in laws that suppress trans rights receiving wider public support, even when they go against medical best practices.
