Do you have any instances of EU going after companies without any presence in EU for not adhering to GDPR?
Is the EU going to invade Iranian company because I complained I want to delete my data in their server? best they'll do is block their website.
Try using your GDPR rights on chinese websites like Aliexpress and Alibaba. I'll wait.
Any god damn law can be written in the books, doesn't mean they apply universally outside of their jurisdiction.
We're sick of closed walled-garden monoliths like Reddit! Let's move to an open federated protocol where anyone can participate and the APIs can't be locked down!
Can you point to where the fediverse collectively said that? Speak for yourself and don't act like fediverse was designed to suit your definition of freedom. The fediverse is open and federated as in, there are multiple instances and owners without a centralized administration and the owners who hosts those instances decide what to lock down.
For a customer who wants the best phone for their money, the Fairphone is objectively worse
Objectivity worse in performance, sure. Some people consider more things than just being a fastest bang for the buck. Unethical mining, forced labour, e-waste, data mining, and lots of other things. If you care at all, that is.
If you want to compare that to a product made by a billion dollar company, no one is stopping anyone. There is cost associated with doing things ethically. Small companies aren't financed to eat those costs to gain the market. It speaks more about principles than anything else.
I don't disagree with Linus' suggestion at the end: even the fairest phone is environmentally costlier than rescuing an old second hand phone
is it? The person who sold the phone is most definitely going to buy a new phone and if they sold the phone released last year they will most likely do so every year. The reason there's a second hand market with a year old phones is because people obsessively buy new phones. How exactly is that environmentally friendly than starting to use a phone made by a company with higher ethics? Surely the later stacks higher in being environmentally and morally friendly?
Duchebag is spouting capitalists "trickle down" economics. Rather than fix the cause, find the flex tape to hide it. Rich people buy new phones, less rich buy phones from the rich, and so on. No one needs to look past the marketing into ethics in how they were made and companies keep profiting in billions by exploitation of the poor. So so environmentally friendly.
kick the entire neighborhood's ass all on their own
people actually believe this shit. 🤦♂️
israel has always, since its inception has been propped up by western powers. Just because you don't see them hoisting up a different flag than their own, doesn't mean they are fighting anyone alone.
This is like US boasting they alone kicked the british out without any assistance.
Well, almost everyone blocks ads so this is the next iteration. Anyone with a few braincells saw this coming. In the future, the only way you're going to get actual/verifiable/trustworthy news is by paying for it. Like the good ol' times.
Who knew journalism is an actual job? not me. I want every website to be free.
The freely available ones are going to run by the rich to peddle ads and propaganda (yes they do it already but there are still free press floating around asking for donations, which will eventually dry out). The poor will be misled with mis-information and clickbaits and people will wonder why shitheads are getting elected everywhere.
Bots will be posting these on every social media (federated or not) and the freeloaders and "no advertisements ever" crowd that never contribute anything to a sustainable internet with free and accessible information for all will be complaining about "enshittification" all day long.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. Like and subscribe. And don't forget to hit that bell button. Thanks for our sponsors at Raid: Legends for sponsoring this text. Read the non shitty, ad-free version at our patreon.
India has fascist leadership and a millions of nationalists brigading criticism online. Those they can't shun with countless lies and bullying are silenced with the help of big tech. The subcontinent should never have become a single country.
The colonized states basically organized as one as a protest of the british colonialism. And the first thing they did was start a religious war among themselves. They were always trying to be a religious fascist state. And they made two of them after the partition.
I’ll wait for confirmation on Android having some massive vulnerability that iOS doesn’t seem to have.
Attackers can supposedly target Android and iOS devices, obtaining a multitude of sensitive information, such as hardware information, GPS data, contacts, media files, and real-time audio recordings.
Least obvious Apple cultist.
Good. Get a good taste your own medicine.
It's time how people in the US felt foreign entities meddling with their elections for a change, huh?
grabs popcorn
I like it. can you make a pull request?
But that's just Apple's ecosystem
Apple isn't the only one allowing redundancy, most popular password managers allow you to lose all your devices and still have passkeys securely stored in the cloud. And people who don't even know that password managers exists, aren't going to the early adopters of passkeys.
People like this scare me.
Do you know anything about cyber security or are just passionate because you get to talk about war. If China were to coordinate an widespread attack, do you think it is as simple as the attack will come straight from the computer in the CCP headquarters and you go in to save the day?
Do you have any idea of how many outdated, unsecured, vulnerable devices (most of them made in China) could be used around the world just to have a plausible deniability. Ever heard of phishing? It could have come from your friend's email and you could be the one that's spreading the worm. And it would take months to trace it back to China. These are not script kiddies you see on the movies.
Start Air gaping critical infrastructure from the internet instead of dreaming about hypothetical wars.
didn't know that. thanks!
what's wrong with the ml ccTLD? the circlejerk about it meaning marxists leninist that dumbasses decided to go along with?
is this middle school?
You're a bigger idiot if you think US is not nearly as bad as the CCP. People actively avoid anything that's closely connected to CCP. Chinese products are considered poorly built by default and appsconsidered malware and all the propaganda around makes anyone cautious of getting a "Chinese" phone or anything. US has been caught numerous times with backdoors and NDA contracts with the social media networks.
Most people can avoid chinese tech companies and products by just looking at their brand names, US tech companies? not so much. Smartphones wouldn't work properly without connecting to Apple or Google networks. Android users can install ROMs but Apple is just damn useless for privacy (unless you swallow their blue pills wholesale).
Just because China is open about their surveillance network doesn't mean other countries aren't. Anytime US companies are found to be spying, it's "corporate shit" and "greed", or some numbnut would say "capitalism", but things like Government having a closed backdoor to everything, no one fucking bats an eye. Ever. and is swept under the rug. Double standards much?
Your arguments are just talking points you're fed that make you feel better about yourself. Fuck China and fuck USA. US has been fucking medling with countries worldwide with their surveillance and shaping narratives with social media companies to benefit itself. Going as far as to perpetuate genocide and violence among people, you guys fucking deserve Tiktok.

I always thought that powers that be wouldn't let us get away from the status quo that easy in the fediverse and there must be an instance that's indirectly funded by them but they inherently control the narrative. It might be that or the reddit exodus landed all the crazies in one instance because other instances were overwhelmed but LW was not 🤔. so who knows…

with that logic, do you also block all of the internet?? All the ads, phishing, malware, cryptominers, virus, worms spread through the internet. so it makes sense to turn off the Internet. So why are you here?

pull requests would work a lot better than blog posts.
USA does bad things
Some people make memes about it
People in the USA:
Let's make our country accountable for bad thing it does
What's happening? My fee fees are hurt.
Or the most popular:
We don't even think about your country
Then they call others snowflakes. ㄟ(ツ)ㄏ
Aren't you folks supposed to be all for "freedom of expression" or something. Oh right… that's only when youre the one spewing the bullshit.
You should join the grammar nazi brotherhood. Being annoyed at petty little things like this is what they do best.
