COVID had the opposite effect, as this article covers. Motor vehicle deaths rose following a fairly steady decline over the past twenty years. Gun deaths just rose as at a higher pace, going from third following cancer to first.
But just comparing cause of death misses the point, really: this is not a phenomena that peer countries experience. While this has become somewhat accepted as the norm in the US, there's no real reason we ever had to let it get this bad.
Eh... don't count on it. China has some significant weaknesses. In the short term, economic growth has slowed significantly. Debt in the private and public sector is having consequences, both in the housing market and elsewhere. In the longer term, China is aging at a faster rate than the US, both due to a low birth rate and immigration rates that are virtually nonexistent compared to the US. China's GDP is outpacing the US for now, but it's an open question how long that pace will last.
Oh, for sure, these things still happen and far too often when it comes to race, from what I've heard about studies on race and disparities in treatment in schools. I'm specifically talking about hair length. I remember there were some Black boys around me in high school with longer hair, but the school drew from an area that was more heavily white, Latino, and Asian so the sample size was minuscule. This is in Portland, OR so of course the culture is going to be different than a conservative part of Texas.

Unlike the idiots running this school, my school administrators had better things to do than go after them for a style choice that had no bearing on academic performance.

I was part of that! I was on a team that made a web site that visualized the effect on poverty levels on a county-by-county basis when the minimum wage was at different levels. It made the need for a split minimum wage obvious, since the minimum wage that is necessary for metro areas is inappropriate for rural areas. Rumor has it that the legislature used it in the decision making to some degree.
The argument isn't just around content, it's around hosting. If Google is sitting there scarfing down Reddit's data, that costs Reddit in server time. That can get extremely expensive. So yeah, if Google is going to train an AI that Google will profit off of, it should pay Reddit for server time.
Yeah, I've really liked the flexibility it gives me while leaving behind hassle. Before I had tried XMonad and AwesomeWM with various tray apps for things like wireless networking. I enjoyed using them, but I did not enjoy the amount of work I put into set up. Sure I like tinkering, but there's a certain level where I just want to have a dependable, working system so I can get on with my day.
No, there are specific qualifying disabilities, and just because someone has one of the listed disabilities doesn't mean they're automatically getting sub minimum wage. So cerebral palsy is a qualifying disability, but a software developer whose work is not meaningfully affected would not be eligible (not that software developers usually earn minimum wage to begin with). Likewise just because someone has a disability that could affect their work doesn't mean that it rises to the level of a qualifying disability.
Pop!_OS. I previously got stuck on tiling window managers, but I found that they have prohibitively large amounts of setup involved. It's also not uncommon for support applications to be poorly maintained or to have a poor UX. Pop!_OS's desktop gathers everything together very nicely into a working shell with minimal setup, but still has that sweet, sweet tiling WM.
