  • Proxmox definitely has a harder set-up i am currently doing it right now and I've found it a bit of a learning curve, but it is definitely the ultimately better and more fun option if you ask me ;)

Someone should correct me if I'm wrong but auto update should be as easy as scheduling the commands for apt or whatever package manager your using to update.

  • I partitioned my disk 50/50 for Windows and Linux with some proprietary software. It didn't end up working and i whiped my windows install.

Then I bought a new boot drive so my linux and macos install are physically separated.

  • I actually used bazzite as my first mainstream linux distro and I hated it because every second command I pasted in didn't work and I didn't understand why. I eventually figured out it was due to the immutable nature of bazzite and began telling everyone to never use bazzite because it doesn't work very well.

Now I actually understand what the actual upsides are and why it's different I will change to mainstream distros to actually get a hold of what it's usually like before considering changing back over.

  • For me at least I never considered a synology nas it seemed like the apple of home servers. Especially when I enjoy building machines anyway there was no point. Although I can definitely see the appeal for some people.

I wonder if there are more open solutions that don't require building a machine from scratch.

  • Thanks for posting that was really informative i was always intending on learning more about package managers at some point. What I wonder is when you want a package and it's available as both a dnf package and a flatpack which one should you chose?

  • Finally starting my self hosted journey. I have everything I need I'm setting up a 6tb nas for linux iso's photos and files. And I recently got a "broken" laptop that works perfectly fine that I will use for running all my applications in proxmox such as immich, jellyfin and nextcloud. And probably many others in the near future.

  • Consider that with the latest hardware your processor is under 1% or 2% load running a bloat machine like windows even if you used the lightest weight distro without any desktop environment at all the maximum possible performance gain would be 1% or 2%.

  • With you first point i disagree. I think public transport is often just fine or even preferable for people with mobility issues. If they are wheelchair bound then they cannot drive. And public transport has come a long way in terms of supporting disabled people such as most trains trams buses from were I come from now support wheelchair access.

Although I would be interested if there are any examples were taking public transport is infeasible or unhelpful to specific situations.

  • Oh your right I wasn't aware that box buddy is just a gui for distrobox. I thought it was a reskin of the boxes program built into fedora.

Although from my experience box buddy in bazzite doesn't work super reliably.

  • OK so a lot of people are recommending bazzite. I have been using it for a while and I do not recommend it. Mainly due to the fact you more or less can't install any program other than through the software centre unless you use a vm with the included "box buddy" program which for me has been very hit and miss for which programs work.

Go ahead and try bazzite for yourself but I would recommend either fedora or Linux mint both with the xfce desktop since a lightweight desktop seams to be what your looking for.
