  • Dropbox keeps hounding me to upgrade to a paid level - back when they were incentivizing sign-ups with free storage for the inviter and invitee, I spin up several throwaway accounts and VMs to give myself bonus storage (I'm just over 21GB).

It's plenty for some critical secondary backups of wedding photos, docs, and an encrypted volume or two - but I absolutely cannot see myself paying for even their cheapest tier.

  • I worked with the guy who owned https://www.penisland.net/. He actually made some laser engraved pens and pass them around work. Man, Earthlink Cloud in the late 2000s was a blast.

  • African Pigmy Hedgehogs are incredibly cute and have a lot of personality but are incredibly sensitive to it to their environment and will die unless properly taken care of.

    For instance!

    1. They need to exercise or else they will gain weight and die from obesity.
    2. But don't get the kind of rodent wheels with supporting bars because they'll turn their head while running and potentially break their neck.
    3. Also, don't get the wheels with mesh/holes on their running surface as their toes or paws can get stuck and lead to injury.
    4. They will poop and pee constantly in their area, which means daily cleaning.
    5. Their nails/claws grow fast and must be clipped or they will start to grow back up into the bottom of their paws.
    6. They need 8 hours of "day light" in the form of a lamp or their body will think it's hibernation time.
    7. They must be kept around 65°F-90°F or they'll either think it is winter and try hibernating, or they will overheat and die.
    8. They can be tumor machines. Our one hedgehog Prickles had a hysterectomy after developing tumors in her uterus. She also developed multiple mouth tumors.

  • Psh... That's amateur, I just keep incrementing the number at the end 'password1', 'password2', etc. Gotta fool the password reuse counter!

  • After about a year of using Keycloak for some #dayjob side projects, I literally just stood it up in my homelab.

It does have a learning curve, but it supports OIDC and SAML - those two should get most internal services covered.

Back end can federate with AD or LDAP - for the real stinkers who refuse to support SSO. (Looking at you Netbox)

  • Oh! I can participate!

Everything I have/configure is 100% in Ansible. I learned the hard way that rebuilding a workstation from scratch sucks if I only depend on my brain to remember things.

It takes some effort to keep it updated - if I'm trying out a new app, I have to remember to add it to my config.

The other thing that I've started doing is using Restic for file level backups. That's relatively easy to set up, it supports a multitude of backend storage, and works well with a cron job for braindead backups.

  • Shhhhiiiiiiiiiiii...

    Falls to their death

  • At this point, despite being a bit annoying to explain, it is who I am outside of work. Literally every search results for "pezhore" is me.

  • Man, there's some feels I didn't expect on a Tuesday.

  • I guess if it works to repel one type of blood sucker, it should work on all of them

  • Nothing better than curl https://totally-legit-installer.com/script | sudo bash

  • This is what I've been thinking lately. There's no way to unring that bell after an influx of several million people "join" Mastodon through Threads.

Plus threads has an entire team of engineers who can be abused to get out better looking apps, sys admins who ensure the threads servers are running at minimal load - ensuring a top tier Fediverse experience. Already we've seen a burst of indie developers for Lemmy and Mastodon, but what if I'm not concerned that my microblog app needs to know health biometric data - threads is up when my niche instance goes down.

That's how they get you. Come to threads for a "better user experience"! You can still follow the weird Bean memes, but with a better UI/UX! Don't worry, we at Facebook won't defederate with everyone else once we hit critical mass!
