  • At peak the sff PCs are going to be at least triple the ~30W of the pi 5.

Are you sure? I think that for the same tasks, the i5 (at least 9th gen) is more power efficient than the rpi 5. I was a pi guy, I had them all over the places, but like you, I'm now using SFF/tiny used PCs (when I don't need GPIO).

  • Also flashing custom Head Unit software to your car will be very hard, is not well documented, and likely will void your warranty, giving low incentive for developers to even attempt it :/

I hope that Europe will demand car manufacturers to allow the installation of an after market kit, or better, to install our own software. I'm sure that the open source community will jump in (I'll chip in for sure!)

  • It seems interesting, although it will cost 95€ with the speaker, but I guess that's gonna be a definitely better audio than the one of the HA Voice. The disappointing thing is that they don't sell the enclosure nor provide a 3D design to print your own ☹️

Edit: I've just watched the video; this is a public beta (not shipping yet to Europe), they will provide enclosure (specs to print our own to) with speaker and also all the accessories. I'll keep an eye on the website to check when it will be out of beta and available for Europe. I'm very excited about it!

  • I just had a look at some Z-Wave motion detection sensor and I soon remembered why I chose ZigBee some years ago: they're soooo expensive! ZigBee sensors costs half/a forth of the Z-Wave ones!
Why that? Maybe for the more expensive royalty? More expensive components?
