This whole thing still has me scratching my head.

Such a large portion of the West gets a raging boner about coming to Israel's aide. I get it from the strange doomsday cult belief where something about Israel at war triggers the rapture or some shit. But I don't really believe that's what the western world leaders actually believe.

Trump has his own reality, and only a divine entity understands what's going on in the space between his ears.

Ignoring Trump and the doomsday cult thing, the other things I can think of:

1. US and Europe want an established western sympathizing military power in the middle-east. Some sort of remnant of the Cold war.
2. US and Europe want a military western sympathizing military power with close proximity to the Suez Canal and red Sea, as well as the Mediterranean.
3. The "Sampson Option" that Israel has is completely legitimate and Israel is ready to obliterate everyone if they don't get their way.
4. There's some economic or strategic value the West won't acknowledge.

Even with all that, attack Iran? Iran is not remotely similar to Iraq. Iran will put up much more of a fight. It also won't be a "forever war" like fascists dream about.

Ok, I looked this up as you were being serious. And I didn't realize Russia had a price cap as the sanction, rather than halting all oil production. So it's not that Russia undercuts the market, it's that Russia isnt legally allowed to sell it for any amount above it.

You're right. They would want the price of oil to go down.

But the point still stands that the US needs the price to go up to be profitable. Which puts this all in a really weird lens.

No. Oil has to be a certain price per barrel for extraction to be profitable. Currently the price is below that level for the US, which is primarily done by fracking.

Russia has to undercut already low prices in order to get China/India to accept the sanctioned oil. Any rise in price means they get to ask more while still being cheaper.

Edit: I was wrong. Russia is allowed to export at a maximum price of $60/barrel. Price going up gives them no benefit.

Like yes, Iran is a terrible authoritarian state that is very dangerous. But so is Saudi Arabia?!

So like modern tanks have nuclear, radiological, biological and chemical protections. Does that mean that they are rated to survive a nuclear detonation at a certain radius?

That's why the US is getting involved in Iran so quick. It has nothing to do with Israel - it's about driving the price of oil to extreme heights.

I didn't call it, but there's nothing quite like a war to distract the population from rampant decline at home.

This one is weird though, Iran is allied with Russia. Israel is allied with the US. Historically, this made sense.

But Trump and Putin playing war together would benefit both of them. It allows Putin to pull out of Ukraine because "Iran provided us much help and they need us now." And it allows Russia to maintain the war economy. It benefits Trump because he wants to play war.

Neither leader would have any actual skin in the game, it's just people's lives that would never contribute in another meaningful way to their power.

I don't like this. This is feeling more 1984 than 1984.

Edit: I like this even worse after I read the specifics of the KC-135R and KC-46A. Each can carry about 200,000 lbs of additional fuel. A single F-15E can hold 13,000 lbs internally. 30 KC-135Rs can refuel an entire F-15E 460 times. Israel has 7 KC-130H (60,000lbs) and 7 Boeing 707s (which is what the KC-135 was based on). This isn't just escalation, this is staging for invasion.

They will claim violence. But by numbers alone this can be done peacefully. ICE are cowards. They won't engage a group as large as anything we've seen in any city so far.
