IIRC there’s an episode of Jacobin Radio where they interview the author. Really fascinating, actually! I’ll dig around after work and try to find the link!
Friends and family bankrupted by basic medical needs;
Friends WITH medical insurance unable to afford basic medications like insulin or asthma control inhalers;
The increased atomization of society has led to a collapse of community in most of my country: people don’t care about each other because they can’t because they don’t have the time or money;
It has driven us and continues to drive us towards the complete collapse of the biological systems that sustain our planet at an ever increasing rate.
The only thing people can point and do point to is “oh but more people have more cheap commodities.” Great! At the expense of the common dignity of man and the ecosystems in which he depends, an ever smaller class of bloated egotists has gotten rich beyond comprehension while the rest of the world literally burns and melts in the name of increasing fortunes already beyond any and all conception of need. At the same time, the life of the average person is marked by degraded environments, exposures to industrial toxins, has their profession increasingly made precarious, has the cost of living increase while wages stagnate or shrink, and now is plagued by disasters directly resulting from the climate change a fossil carbon economy has caused.
What about any of that should I like? That I can eat a hamburger for $10 that is mostly ammonia-cleansed meat filler…?
Thank god American media is free and not totally a giant propaganda mill like all those evil nations that aren’t America and not as special as America is.
My point is that I think TikTok has a user base that is far less likely to care about privacy, openness of platforms, etc. In my opinion, it’s an app that is built for and used primarily people that don’t care. You can tell them over and over about its privacy abuses, you name it, and they won’t leave.
Reddit and Twitter tend to have older and more often nerdier users that are more likely to know about/understand/care about these issues and react accordingly.
Also because we totally won when the Sacklers’ business entities had to pay a fine but left the people themselves…still rich beyond reason and at liberty.
I am not trying to be condescending, but I get the feeling you may not be as versed in privacy matters. Those other social media apps require access to huge amounts of information about you and everything you do on your device. Location, location history, health and fitness info, contacts, browsing history, etc. Depending on what company we’re talking about, that info is used to generate detailed targeted profiles to sell to advertising companies, and possibly also to train in-house AI models. Lemmy doesn’t do that because it’s a community driven and hosted platform whose goal is not to sell the information generated by its users.
The fact that this is true is honestly my favorite part of Lemmy. I love the old school feeling of it being a novelty and a free for all and a work in progress all at once.
Woof. I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s done these things!
I want to say that you’re right, but I’m not NEARLY as familiar with *BSD or it’s history as I am with Linux. My understanding, though, is that iOS/macOS are based upon Darwin, and that Darwin derives a fairly significant portion of its code base from BSD. So, in part I believe the answer is yes.
As a total side note: do you have a recommendation for a good BSD derivative distribution to try? I’ve tried probably 15 Linux distros, but never made it to BSD-world!
