As an example, Louis Pasteur gave away his patent for the good of medicine. It sounds almost impossible to believe against the modern backdrop of pharmaceutical companies that don't even want to develop cures, they want "subscription" customers.
People have been trained now that since no one watches out for them they have to take their pound of flesh however it can be gotten--this is what stands out to people when they talk about societal decay, selfishness and anomie but it can be difficult to put ones finger on without understanding the workings of the machine.
Up voted for the dark humor but sincerely it's Feudalism. A central state nor laws cannot be relied on for order nor process so those with the means purchase or are anointed with safety and power.

I provided a response and then they locked the thread. If we can't even have a discussion about the world why the fuck would I be on fucking Lemmy instead of another shite censored, billionaire-owned platform that at least has user & content depth?
1.5 years, 1300 comments, fuck Lemmy.world and the mod @JonsJava who understands his position in facilitating respectful dialogue that conform to rules to be "overbroadly apply them and pretend it's something that needs censoring so I can get my jollies" and then say "I don't have time to deal with this" when you get blowback and lock a thread with tons of engagement. Yep, been thinking about how when everyone on your team is in on it, you just annoint an official crypto currency of the US government and of course you were in long before, then you just own the entire world and your currency is above most governments reach.
Super disappointed mods can't parse people not being surprised or feeling something was deserved as a consequence of their actions, and advocating the violence.
My comment that got removed was "can't imagine why this happened", which neither calls for, nor celebrates violence, but expresses that the conditions leading to such an action, in our dystopian US are predictable, have happened before countless times in history all over the world.
The inability to acknowledge the fault of the powerful actors and system that created such conditions and utter lack of consequences for the rich and powerful in the US are what caused such responses for an agreeably horrific act. The issue that won't go away, on Lemmy or anywhere else, and oversimplifying the above to "advocating violence" is disingenuous if deliberate, and idiotic if accidental.
Just read the same article about CA last week; too much solar to be used so the excess solar generated, get this, was sold-often at a loss--to Arizona(the fact AZ can't make it's own sufficient solar shows the willful neglect, economic and political nature of energy!) and it lowered AZ bills but not CA. We're back to energy traders and Enron price manipulations in the US after 20 years.

In the US and I read mountains of business and economic news,much of most of it assumes the reader supports and agrees with the underlying premises of cronie capitalism. It's a really helpful way to understand how businesses operate, think and where economy and society will be driven.
For people who have been trained to eat junk food news, the headline is all they have the attention and critical thinking skills for.
