  • Except that second button won't be there. There's something weird going on in our economy where the customers can't actually afford the products but somehow their attention/data is still valuable. I don't get it

  • We lived in a city where high schoolers take public transit and that worked well for them, but the district could never hire enough drivers for the elementary and middle schools. Even with the drivers they had, they had to stagger school start and end times so that buses could do multiple routes. Some schools started at 7 and others at 9. Then the problem you highlight comes up, that there are only a few hours between shifts, so it was harder for drivers to have a second job. Many drove Uber between.

  • Debilitating addictions are an illness. Should we kill all of the bees because some people are severely allergic? I can understand the mysterious woman feeling that way, but the sane response is treatment of the few susceptible, not prohibition for all the rest.

  • We see it. We aren't looking away. The people are trying to block shipments, they've told Joe Biden he's throwing away his second term (as if an 80 year old cares) and probably a good chunk of US democracy over this. There is a lag, I think, in comprehension. They think they will keep getting away with this "short term", "local", violence, but the collateral damage of trauma, distrust, and hopelessness spreads faster and farther than ever before, the ruin of one nation can shake the foundation of all. The horror of these actions will not be omitted and will only help fill the ranks of global crime and the wretchedness it exploits.

  • I love

    social situations are unsolvably complex

This idea has helped me so much, just thinking, you know, I'm not so stupid, if I can't figure this situation out completely probably a lot of other people can't either and so it must be all right to ask questions or make mistakes.

Additionally, maybe not useful to everyone, but framing over-embarrassment as a little bit impolite has helped me move on more quickly from my own social mistakes to avoid making other people feel bad in sympathy, if that makes any sense.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • This is similar to something some big us state department person said on NPR at the beginning of 2021-- that it has to do with the placement of some NATO mistake within each of Moscow. It sounded stupid then (the guy spent half the 10 minute interview in a warbled rendition of "You Have to be Carefully Taught" from "The King and I", not joking, I'm sorry I don't remember who he was), and it sounds dumber now. You don't convince you neighbors to stand down by brutally invading one of them.

  • Gaslamp district in San Diego had a cafeteria like this years ago, guessing it's no longer a thing, but simple cheap menu would have steady customers, maybe profitable, it's the business development people who would oppose.

  • I love this and have had similar thoughts in relation to my non verbal kid wanting to keep memories in a way they can point out different parts and link together multiple things to make new stories or comments or hypotheticals. Important to have the context and the parts and named things all relating together. I don't know much about it, but there is a thing called "sidecar" file that can be associated with media. There are some moves to make EXIF data more standardized. So there's a chance this could be done in an open format.

  • I'm really amazed at all of the people working hard to make Google-free this and self hosted that. Moreover, Google has over time been a really frustrating service as they kill off products or reduce functionality and user controls to force their agenda, so I'm always looking for ways to export my own data for safe keeping, or put a different user interface on their apis.

But, I also kind of like living in this super connected hive future. I'm not sure you can get the social side of things without taking some privacy risks. If you're going to risk it, Google is one big risk vs. many small ones. FOSS sounds great if people are really checking, and checking the dependencies, and checking again each month as things are updated. But nothing's guaranteed and a rooted device not using Play services gives greater exposure to bad actors other than Google. What are these services you pay for that don't sell your data and how do you know? As far as I can tell every business everywhere has figured out they can get more money from other businesses than from subscribers so customer as product is attractive to all of them.

I think it's a case of, yes I want people to be watching this and letting us know the danger and fighting the erosion of privacy and consumer rights, but also you're never really much better protected than everyone as a whole, so the more interesting solutions are going to be how to know, regulate, and mitigate impact of the major players, not just saying "stop using them".

  • His comment on October 11

I’m shocked at the rhetoric and actions of so many Western leaders & governments, with the exception in particular of Ireland’s government, who for once are doing the right thing. War crimes are war crimes even when committed by allies, and should be called out for what they are.

(The unsuccessful action of Ireland's government to temper the UN statement of support for Israel.

In negotiations that bounced between capitals on Saturday, Ireland was joined by Denmark and Luxembourg in pushing for a statement to include an appeal to avoid escalation, according to diplomatic sources.

Ireland ultimately backed the unnuanced statement.)

Google, Amazon, and Facebook, of all people, pulled out of the conference immediately.
