  • I used to be a Mullvad customer but switched to Proton because I use all the products on their suite. It makes financial sense to me.

Mullvad, however, has the best VPN experience ever. Faster, more stable and way less Captchas (though I'm not sure that's good?). Plus, I love their bullshit free pricing. It's 5 euros a month regardless if you buy 1 month or 2 years. Can't recommend it enough, even though I'm no longer a customer.

  • But why go through those hoops? What is the advantage Debian brings when you have to cherry pick packages and their dependencies from Sid? Stability is no longer an advantage when you are cherry picking from Sid lol.

  • You can also install "app stores" on arch, if you so desire. I believe the most famous one is pamac.

You can configure the firewall with the KDE GUI, you don't need additional knowledge than the one you'd already need for any other system.

I wouldn't recommend Arch for newbies with no technical background but I feel like EndeavourOS is very simple to install and use.

  • Yeah but what's the point of using Debian when you're going to have to manually package newer versions of a lot of software?

  • What problems do you have on Ubuntu? What software is too out of date? Why do you need LTS for a workstation?

  • I wish it was more popular so more job offers would pop up :P

  • The problem is that Russia has far more resources than Ukraine and they have an upper hand in this war. They do not wish to leave empty handed. As sad as it is, for peace to happen Ukraine is going to have to lose something.

Putin already said he doesn't want peace when the opponent has a shortage of ammo so this discussion is irrelevant anyway.

I wish we did more for Ukraine, it's deeply saddening to see the news :(

  • Every info seems to point that Discord hasn't had a single year with positive profit. Here's one of the sources

Discord isn’t in dire financial straits, though it has yet to become profitable

Discord has raised a total of about $1 billion in funding. It has more than $700 million in cash on its balance sheet and the goal to become profitable this year, according to a person familiar with the matter.

  • Revenue alone doesn't mean much, how much was profit?

  • It took a bit more than usual but nothing unreasonable. 3 to 5 minutes at most, in an old MacBook pro.

  • I heard this so many times that I really believed arch was so brittle that my system would become unbootable if I went on vacation. Turns out updating it after 6 months went perfectly fine.

  • My hope, for proton, would be improved search functionality. Currently search only works for email subject, not body. It's really lackluster.

  • Is the search functionality improved in the desktop app?

  • Just use proton VPN, the free tier should be enough.

  • As for the browser I'm going to assume it's my bad. My MBP no longer has browser updates and I incorrectly assumed it to be the case for the 2014 model as well. My bad.

Regarding the performance difference, it really is true. I thought my macbook was just filled with junk but even after (painfully) reinstalling everything it remained just as slow. Note that "everything" is basically a web development stack without a database, nothing too cluttered.

I used to get the spinning wheel all the time, never had it on any of the distros I've since installed on my MBP. Don't like Arch? No problem, there's plently of choice out there. Whatever distro you want will probably work fine. It's really fast but don't take my word, try it yourself.

"Works flawlessly" and "primary way of interacting" are limited to your use cases and experience. Not even allowing me to install xcode is not flawless, it's really dumb. The trackpad works good enough and I wouldn't trade, say, security updates for an improved version 🤷

  • Running an out of date MacOS is a way, way worse experience.

    • You can't update any browser
    • Laptop runs extremely slow
    • Installing software doesn't always work, you have to search the web for a compatbile version. Notable case is xcode.

Installing Arch Linux on my old laptop greatly enhanced the experience. Everything works great, laptop is at least 3x faster.

it’s a far better experience than the half baked Linux support.

What support are you going to get on a 2014 macbook? Zero support.

  • I've been using Proton Pass since it launched and I think it's really really good.

    Positives:

    • Nice integration with both desktop and mobile
    • Integrated in the proton suite, which I was already using
    • Allows you to generate an email alias for each login automatically. Websites will never have your real email and you can easily generate a new alias if one has been compromised
    • Supports 2 factor authentication via TOTP, works really well

    Negatives:

    • No passkey support yet
    • Free version only supports like 5 email alias
  • It still works and is my daily driver! On both mobile and desktop!

I think it's extremely important to support Google alternatives and I will continue to do so. Firefox still has pain points and recognizing them is also important.
