It's taken a while for me to get to the point where I'll write a comment, and think "do I really want to kick this potential hornets nest?" And delete the comment.

I find myself having a much better time hanging out and interacting with the folks in the asklemmy communities versus those in political threads.

Important question: sorbet or ice cream/gelato?

It's a fairly expensive treat, but Jenny's makes a dairy free pint that's coffee sorbet mixed with delightful coconut cream.

The coffee sorbet section is very bright and tangy, unlike any coffee gelato or ice cream I've ever had before. It juxtaposes really well with the creaminess of the coconut cream.

Usually I work on a pint over the course of weeks, having a few spoonfuls at a time. I demolished this within two days haha.

Fairly big. Main issue is the house is really old so there's a good amount of extra stuff that I'm opting to get. I think I got quotes as low as 28k from some companies, so the rivian would be 3 of those haha.

Quite frankly it hardly matters. You asked for proof of folks politically engaged yet not voting, I shared what I thought constitutes proof. You believe it doesn't qualify, but other folks reading this can draw their own conclusions.

The former is an assertion that all wage earners lives aren't affected by voting therefore they shouldn't bother voting. IF you're a wage earner THEN there's no point in voting".

The latter is understanding a scenario from a potential perspective of a wage earner who doesn't see change being discouraged.

I don't read it this way all - there was no conditional on party efficacy and it in fact was an assertion that their lives won't change due to who was elected, which changed the overall statement to read like the working class shouldn't vote.

Tbf the 50% that voted for trump aren't here, plain and simple, so that's why you don't see engagement with them.

The only political engagement you'll see here on Lemmy shifts overwhelmingly left for all parties, so you'll see mostly squabbling between various left factions.

I'm not going into the thinking behind it, but it's certainly happening.

Being politically "engaged" on Lemmy doesn't mean much in terms of ensuring voter participation. I've seen plenty of folks with a "democrats have to earn my vote" sentiment. That very much seemed to play out given the much lower voter participation for Democrats this year.

Yup, I feel that. My "new" car purchase this year was a used 2015 Nissan leaf that was like 6k. It baffles me how my colleagues budget their money. A rivian?? Son, that's the cost of a new roof.

EDIT: I don't know new car prices so I had to look it up. It's actually almost the cost of two new roofs! The high end model is a down payment for a nice house in my market!

Yes, I'd agree that for it to be a punishment entitlement would need to be involved - for example nobody feels punished that they didn't win the lotto by buying one ticket.

Entitlement can take the form of the status quo, whether or not that's justified is not a conversation I have enough critical thinking for.

I think what I haven't seen cleared up in this thread is there are actually two reasons for 4b floating around - one is to try and bring about societal change by crashing the birth rate, but the other is simply out of safety and self-preservation of women. If we focus on the latter, it makes sense that women in more dangerous societies will choose 4b more often than those where they feel safer.

The conclusion I come to is that 4b will be more common in states that do not value the bodily autonomy/safety of women, which I'd say largely points to conservative states.

In a way, if safety and bodily autonomy is the reason for choosing 4b, it will self-regulate to not "punish" or affect those who generally vote to pass policies treating women properly.

I think there was some nuance that was lost in the call for "all" women to participate in 4b

A punishment requires a penalty or deprivation, and since dating is not a requirement, there can be no deprivation occurring.

Fwiw, a common example of a punishment removing something that is desired but not required is temporarily taking away X from a rowdy kid, be it phone, snacks, etc, which does poke a hole in that assertion.

My parents sent me a video from a Chinese "practice English" channel about the negatives of Kamala.

It was fucking insane, the channel was mostly "this is what you say at the doctor's office", "let's practice ordering food", and then hard conservative talking point videos casually thrown in. I've always told others that non-english speaking communities in America are especially prone to conservative radicalization because they're so isolated from the general public.

I love them, but I was furious when I replied. It's a little sad honestly, I've given up hope on them politically. Had to make it very clear that if they talk to me or our kids about politics we will not engage and will just leave.

Yeah, others have portrayed that as the goal here.

I just feel like I wouldn't feel particularly attached to the fate of a country raised by brainwashing conservative families anyways, so it's a scorched earth approach. Yes, you've broken the system, and it can be remade now, but those doing the remaking likely won't carry your values....
