Not strictly Linux related, but in college I was an IT assistant. One day I was given a stack of drives to run through dariks boot and nuke.

I don't remember exactly what happened, but I think midway through, my laptop shut off.

Guess who picked the wrong drive to wipe with DBAN :)

My folks are immigrants, and having a mother tongue that isn't English makes it so much easier to get captured by misinformation. When there's only one radio station, or two newspapers in your mother tongue, your worldview unfortunately becomes easily shaped...

Another big difference is the apartments are actually very affordable. Two minimum wage earners could afford a 3 2 bedroom apartment in 6 of the 23 wards in Tokyo.

Probably, but A) dude literally had his hardware yoinked by the cops and B) there was no reasonable schedule shared with the user re: data deletion.

I wish googles "read only" notification said "we will delete your data after 3 months of read-only status", just to allow folks to properly plan. If you told me the only penalty was my data will be read only, and kept accepting my money, I would assume everything is okay.

Yeah, that's my main issue - having a 1 week deadline for deletion sprung on you when it's not physically possible to extricate the data in that timespan is rough.
